5G: Samsung and Qualcomm break new 8 Gb / s speed record

Samsung has once again broken a speed record on a 5G network. The Korean firm has reached 8 Gb / s for download. For this, she used a technique allowing different frequencies to be combined. Samsung also used a Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 modem, part of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. This speed record was set in the Texas laboratories of Samsung.

Even more than 4G, 5G is a very complex technology. It uses several types of frequencies. It can coexist with 4G. But sometimes she is alone. It allows multiple connections, of course. But unlike 4G, it accepts that the same smartphone can connect to an antenna simultaneously in 4G and 5G. Of course, not all modems are capable of supporting all of the options 5G offers. Especially when it comes to compatible frequencies and the number of simultaneous connections.

The best seems to be the Snapdragon X65. This is a modem developed by Qualcomm (its little name will certainly have put your mind to it). This component was presented by Qualcomm in February 2021. So almost a year ago. But it still hasn’t been integrated into a smartphone. Indeed, the Snadragon X65 will be offered with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the processor for high-end phones from 2022, or with the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3, the processor for Windows ARM PCs that will arrive in the coming months.

Samsung breaks 5G speed record with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X65 modem

Qualcomm announced last February that the Snapdragon X65 was the first 5G modem to be able to reach a speed of 10 Gb / s, a good progression compared to the 7 Gb / s offered by its predecessor, the Snapdragon X60 (which equips the Snapdragon 888 and 888 +). And Samsung partially confirms this claim. The Korean giant carried out a technical test with the modem in its Texan laboratory located in Plano during which a download speed of 8.08Gb / s has been reached. Suffice to say that this is a new record for a downward path.

To do this, the Snapdragon X65 used several technologies specific to 5G networks with which the component is compatible. First of all, it is a network StandAlone (HER). It does not coexist with 4G. Then, it jointly uses several frequency bands. Frequencies below 6 GHz, but also millimeter frequencies (mmWave). Then, the modem massively uses the technology MiMo (Multiple In, Multiple Out). Finally, she uses a quadrature amplitude modulation more complex, allowing much more data to pass.

Note that all these techniques to optimize the 5G speed are not available on the commercial networks of our dear operators. So do not wait to reach such a speed right out of the box of your next high-end smartphone (the very next Xiaomi 12 or OnePlus 10 Pro, for example). In addition, it is a laboratory test and not in real condition. But it is possible that, in a few years, we will be able to benefit from a flow approaching.
