8K TVs could well be banned in Europe from 2023

While Europe is currently going through an unprecedented energy crisis, new measures to limit the energy consumption of electrical appliances could end the sale of 8K televisions as early as next year.

As flatpanelshd reports, Europe plans to update its Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) from March 2023. The latter specifies new, even stricter rules in terms of energy consumption, which must be respected by television manufacturers.

The new regulations will require 55-inch 8K TVs a maximum power consumption of 84 W. This limit will be set at 112 W for 65 inch models, while the TVs of 75 inches will be allowed to consume a maximum of 141 W. As a reminder, 8K TVs were until now exempt from consumption limits, since these were only imposed on OLED and LCD televisions.

These measures could lead to the end of 8K TVs in Europe

Unfortunately for 8K TV makers, current models consume far more than the new limits allow. Indeed, Samsung’s 65-inch models consume almost 300 W, double what the new measurement predicts. If this really were to be adopted, this would therefore lead to the end of 8K TVs in Europe.

The Korean giant was slightly reassuring by saying that reducing the consumption of its televisions will be a complicated challenge to meet, but that the company will do its utmost to find a solution. Samsung intended to sell more 8K TVs than 4K TVs in 2022, but things are obviously off to a bad start. On their side, its competitors are much more pessimistic. Marek Maciejewski, Product Development Director at TCL Europe, has a more decided opinion. If the measure were to pass, there will be no more 8K televisions in Europe.

The 8K Association also said these measures were unrealistic. ” Unless something changes, March 2023 will spell the end of the emerging 8K industry with the 8K EU Regulatory Ruling. This is the date when the new EU power consumption regulations are due to come into force. Power consumption limits for 8K TVs (and microLED-based displays) are set so low that essentially none of these devices will pass “.

The European Union had recently updated its energy label in March 2021, which led to the transition of many TV models to the lowest energy class (G). The new consumption limit for 8K TVs could therefore be a new turn of the screw from which the industry will find it difficult to recover.
