Google Maps is more accurate on Paris

Google Maps maps are now much more precise for several additional cities, including Paris. Width of sidewalks, presence of islands for pedestrians, traffic lights… Additional details, essential for anyone who wants to plan a route on foot or by bike.

In August 2020, when the pandemic was in full swing, Google announced much more accurate maps for several major cities. London, New York and San Francisco were among the first metropolises to take advantage of it. The objective at the time was to provide users with much more detailed information on the routes, roads and passages to be taken on foot, by bicycle or any other soft mobility vehicle.

Support the development of soft mobility

These more precise maps, which display the width of sidewalks, pedestrian crossings or even the shape of a road to scale, have been designed to meet the needs of all those who have decided to no longer take their car or public transport. in common in a context of health crisis: we multiply the risks of contamination when we find ourselves locked together in a small space.

Google did not stop there. These detailed maps have been available since last August in Berlin, Seattle, Singapore and Sao Paulo. And now, it is Paris intramural which benefits from it, alongside about fifty other world metropolises. And the search engine intends to deploy this new mapping to more and more urban centers.

Fortunately, the pandemic is ebbing more and more, even if we shouldn’t declare victory too soon as the Omicron variant reminded us. One of the consequences of the health crisis is the very strong push for soft mobility, starting with the explosion of cycling in cities, which requires specialized infrastructure. This type of card accompanies a practice that continues to gain in importance.
