A new update to Windows 11 arrives: discover what’s new

Although this week Microsoft has been delayed a little longer than usual, finally it has not missed its appointment. Windows 11 Insiders can now try the new build 22579 of this operating system, which comes with some new features and interesting features and, again, with a large number of bugs, errors and corrected problems so that, little by little, Windows 11 gains the trust of users. Let’s start to see everything that this new system brings.

The first thing to note is that, from March 16 to 22, Microsoft has started a new Bug Bash. Therefore, the next updates of this system will be full of changes, improvements and corrections of all kinds.

Also, if you still don’t have the Windows 11 Insider installed, we can download an updated ISO with this build from the Microsoft website, which makes it much easier to install and test this operating system, both on a real PC and in a virtual machine.

What’s new in build 22579

The main novelty that we find in this new Windows build 22579 is that, finally, system administrators can configure internal policies to exclude removable USBs from BitLocker encryption. Thanks to this, we will finally end the problem of automatic or accidental encryption of storage drives embedded in other devices, such as video cameras, voice recorders, video conferencing systems, medical devices and many more.

Other novelties that we can find in this new compilation are the following:

  • Win32 applications that use CPrintDialog now display the modern dialog for printing.
  • The classic dialog for the “Open With” option is used again, at least for now.
  • By pressing the keyboard shortcut WIN + X, it is possible to open PowerShell if Windows terminal has been uninstalled.
  • New Fluent system icons for the magnifying glass and keyboard.
  • It is now possible to rename startup folders.
  • The Windows 11 “Get Start” app now recommends apps and websites for us to install or pin.
  • Improvements to animations when using touch gestures on the system.
  • The “Run New Task” button is available on all task manager pages. And it has a new icon.
  • Customizable emojis now have a simple indicator.
  • Removed keyboard layout from quick settings.

Microsoft has also included in this new Insider build a new version of your Media Player music player, which includes support for audio CDs. And the “Your phone” app has also been updated to be able to open recent documents directly from the PC.

Fixed bugs in build 22579

In addition to the new features that we have just seen, Windows 11 has also included a good number of fixes for all kinds of bugs and glitches. Let’s see them.

  • General:
    • Fixed an issue that caused Game Services to not work on the previous build.
    • Fixed an issue with the explorer.exe process causing it to stop working on recent builds.
    • Fixed a bug in Windows Insider when trying to upgrade from Windows 10 to the latest builds of Windows 11.
  • Optimized Taskbar:
    • You no longer need to swipe twice on the optimized taskbar to display the quick launch or settings.
    • Addressed a bug where swiping to show the start menu would show a different menu.
    • Notifications will no longer overlap the taskbar.
    • Fixed an issue where when invoking task view, desktops would not fully render.
    • Clicking the middle button launches in a new app now launches a new instance of the program.
  • Start menu:
    • Fixed a bug where start menu folders would display animations even when animations were disabled.
    • Mitigated an issue that caused pinned layouts and home folders to reset to default when restarting explorer.exe.
    • Fixed an underlying issue that caused a transparent line to appear across the start menu.
  • Concentration mode:
    • We will now see the same pauses in focus sessions over 30 minutes started from Notification Center as if we started them from the Clock app.
    • If Do Not Disturb mode is enabled before starting a Focus session, Do Not Disturb mode will not be disabled after the Focus session ends.
    • The focus session is not reset when logging out or restarting the PC.
    • Keyboard focus no longer moves to the top of the notification center when ending a focus session.
    • Fixed an issue that prevented apps from being added to Settings > System > Notifications > Set priority notifications.
  • Entry:
    • Fixed a problem when searching for the “kızgın” emoji.
    • Fixed various bugs with IME keyboards.
    • Fixed an issue that caused the mouse to be invisible in the fields of certain apps-
    • Fixed an issue where the gesture to bring the notification center from the side of the screen was not working for some languages.
  • Settings:
    • Fixed some translations, like the one for “Network and Internet”.
  • Windows:
    • If transparency is turned off in “Settings > Personalization > Colors”, the Alt+Tab background is no longer transparent either.
    • When dragging a window to the top of the screen and then back down, the animation is dismissed.
    • Made some minor tweaks to fix bugs in animations.
    • Fixed minor explorer.exe crash when dragging certain windows through instant layouts.
    • Mitigated an issue that caused the task view to become unresponsive while instant assist was displayed on the screen.
    • The ALT + Tab menu no longer crashes when invoked from a very quick gesture.
    • Fixed an issue with explorer.exe causing it to crash when entering and exiting an application in full screen mode.
  • Net:
    • Mitigated an issue that caused mobile connections to not work.
    • Fixed an issue where Wi-Fi speed degradation would occur on previous builds.
  • Voice access:
    • Fixed an issue that caused the voice access banner to block the top row of desktop icons.
  • Live Subtitles:
    • Live captions will now display on desktops.
    • The maximum height of the live subtitle window is now limited to 40% of the monitor height.
    • Live subtitles no longer crash when reducing the maximum height of the window.
    • Switching audio to mono will no longer block live subtitles.
  • Storyteller:
    • Fixed an issue with how collapsed sections within Settings > Accessibility > Narrator were read when navigating using the Shift + Tab shortcut.
  • Task Manager:
    • Fixed some crashes in the high-impact task manager.
    • Fixed an issue where if the focus was inside the Details page and you started typing, the focus would stop moving through the block list.
    • When using the Performance page in summary view, the task manager title bar will now be hidden.
  • Others:
    • The percentage on the floating volume indicator that is displayed when using the volume up and down hardware keys is now displayed according to the system layout.
    • Improved focus and keyboard navigation when moving around and closing accessibility options on the lock screen.

All of these fixes are exclusive to Windows 11 build 22579, and will only be available to users running this Insider build. However, Microsoft reserves the possibility of bringing some fixes to the stable version of the operating system through a cumulative patch.

Errors pending to be corrected in Windows 11

In addition to all the previous bugs, which are not few, Microsoft has also updated the list of pending errors to be corrected in build 22579 with bugs that will be addressed in future updates:

  • Taskbar optimized for tablets:
    • It doesn’t always collapse after launching an app or tapping outside of the expanded taskbar on 2-in-1 devices.
    • Some areas of the operating system do not yet track the height of the expanded taskbar on 2-in-1 devices.
  • File Browser:
    • Suggested results when using the search engine may not work correctly.
    • Work is being done to fix issues with OneDrive floating menu icons and text.
  • gadgets:
    • Pinning a widget to the dashboard sometimes places the widget on top instead of below the already pinned widgets.
    • After rearranging widgets, some users experience issues in the pinned section.
  • Concentration mode:
    • The “clock” app does not update the status of Windows Focus.
  • Storyteller:
    • Natural voices don’t work well in this new build.
  • Live Subtitles:
    • Some applications in full screen mode prevent live subtitles from being visible.
    • Applications placed near the top of the computer screen, and closed before opening live captions, are relaunched below the captions window.
    • The top of maximized apps cannot be reached when subtitles are placed on top.
  • Task Manager:
    • Some tooltips do not accurately display visual settings when using dark mode.

These errors will be corrected little by little as more updates arrive to Insider users of this operating system. And, when the final version arrives, all users will be able to enjoy them.
