A smartphone notification prevented a car theft in extremis

On the night of April 20 to 21, 2022, a Lille resident received a strange notification on his smartphone telling him that the hood of his car was open. Intrigued, he goes to the car park where it is parked to discover two thieves dismantling the equipment of his vehicle one by one.

If car theft has always existed, the arrival of new technologies has allowed bandits to develop new methods to achieve their end. In recent years, some somewhat spectacular practices have emerged, such as the possibility of stealing cars using a simple tablet. Some features that are supposed to make life easier for motorists can also be their worst nightmare. As practical as they are, contactless keys thus represent a veritable gold mine for criminals.

However, technology can also prevent the worst. A Lille resident recently had the (almost) happy experience of it. While he was sleeping deeply, the latter received, on the night of April 20 to 21, 2022, a notification on his smartphone. The device tells him that the bonnet of his car has just been opened. However, it is parked in an underground car park, several meters away. In other words, this notification means only one thing: someone is trying to interfere inside.

He manages to save his car thanks to his smartphone

The 45-year-old man therefore decides to go there, when the clock shows 3:25 a.m. His intuition had been right. Once there, he discovers two men dismantling his car, piece by piece. On the ground, many pieces of equipment are already lying and waiting to be transported in the car of the two thieves. Luckily for the victim, they won’t have time.

The latter immediately calls the police, who quickly arrive at the scene of the crime. One of the accomplices manages to escape. The second, a young man aged 19, was taken into custody pending trial. The moral of the story: never underestimate weird smartphone notifications.
