The courage of Bear, a puppy of Koolie breed, was recognized by being decorated for the “animal action” after he rescued more than 100 koalas during the fires that devastated this and other species in Australia between 2019 and 2020.

Romane Cristescu, the dog’s tutor, explained, quoted by Infobae, that Bear is trained to recognize the smell of koalas’ fur, when he finds one, he drops to the ground without disturbing the marsupial: “We believe that he deserves this award because he has behaved very well helping us to find and rescue many koalas ”.

It was reported that Bear is the only dog in the world who is trained to recognize with the smell both the fur and the feces of the koalas, Infobae noted.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF, for its acronym in English) reported that until January 27, 2020, the forest fires they had burned more than 10.6 million hectares, which is an area larger than the state of Virginia.

WWF noted that forest fires have worsened due to the climate crisis. In Australia, intense heat waves are becoming more frequent and, together with prolonged periods of drought, have created favorable conditions for fires.

Bear history

Bear is a six-year-old puppy who was abandoned by its owners when it was still small, as they assured that they were not prepared to take care of the dog whose breed is characterized by having great energy, assuring that it had “behavior problems”.
