Acoustic Energy AE120², new flagship of the British manufacturer’s 100 series

Acoustic Energy has introduced a new loudspeaker that has come to stand at the top of the 100 series, its line of passive loudspeakers. We talk about Acoustic Energy AE120², a floorstanding loudspeaker with a three-way design and with a finish and price that seeks to seduce audiophiles with more limited budgets. This new model completes a line of loudspeakers that has received praise from the media around the world, thanks to its impressive price-performance ratio.

Acoustic Energy was founded in 1987 with the launch of the world-renowned loudspeaker AE1, which set new industry standards for audio performance in a compact enclosure. In 1994 the company joined hands with a foreign manufacturer in order to expand its global reach, but in 2017 it became wholly British-owned again. As we mentioned, this company is characterized by launching products with high sonic performance, capable of receiving the best reviews both from the specialized press and from users who have been able to test it. And all this while maintaining really affordable prices.

Acoustic Energy AE100 range

In January Acoustic Energy released a new iteration of its 100 Series stereo speakers. Four new models were included in this release: the AE108² subwooferthe center speaker AE107²the AE109² bookshelf speaker and the AE100² floorstanding loudspeaker. Now the British manufacturer has put the icing on the cake with the new Acoustic Energy AE120², a second floor model that sports a true three-way design.

Acoustic Energy AE120²: 3-way design in a compact enclosure

The Acoustic Energy AE120² becomes the largest model of the manufacturer’s 100 Series and, therefore, the top of the range. This model combines two 13 cm bass woofers with a 13 cm mid-bass unit (both with paper cones) housed in its own enclosure and carefully designed to mitigate the detrimental effects of back wave reflections. It also has a 25mm soft dome tweeter with Wide Dispersion Technology (WDT) from Acoustic Energy.

Inside the 15mm HDF (High Density Fibreboard) cabinet, the speaker’s three-way crossover is “impedance compensated” to reduce the effects of unwanted vibrations, while internal bracing and Case mass loading are also designed to keep internal resonances at bay. Special attention has also been paid to phase and time alignment for optimal integration and soundstage. The result, according to the manufacturer, is a speaker that delivers smooth, wide-dispersion high frequencies, with clean mids and lightning-quick bass.

Acoustic Energy AE120² speakers in black

Acoustic Energy wanted to design a loudspeaker that, while maintaining great sound performance, is easy to place in users’ rooms. For this the Acoustic Energy AE120² sports a slimmer design than usual, with only 16.5 cm wide. On the other hand, the loudspeaker is supplied with a discreet satin black plinth that is subtle in style but aids stability, further enhancing dynamics and stereo focus.

With all this, we are before a loudspeaker with a 39Hz – 26kHz frequency response and one 90dB sensitivity, with an impedance of 6 ohms and an SPL of 116dB. Its complete dimensions are 950 x 165 x 250 mm and each box has a weight of 19 kg.

The new ones Acoustic Energy AE120² arrive on the market in two finishes: walnut veneer and black. Regarding the price, we know that in the United Kingdom they are sold for 799 pounds, which would be about 960 euros. We will have to wait to know the official price in Europe.
