A group of 24 entities, including large companies, SMEs and research centers, has launched the agricultural project, which will take care of investigate the application of Artificial Intelligence in the agri-food production chain, with the aim of promoting the transformation of the agricultural sector and ensuring that it is carried out in an efficient, sustainable and productive manner.
The consortium is headed by GMV, and includes entities such as the State Agency of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), the Technological Institute of Castilla y León, the University of Salamanca and the University of Seville. It is framed in the Spanish Digital Agenda 2025 and the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.
AgrarIA has set itself the objective of researching the feasibility and possibilities of applying AI, and other technologies related to Industry 4.0, to real solutions in the agricultural sector. With this, the members of the group intend define new agricultural production methods that lead to the agri-food sector being more technological, innovative, sustainable and committed to energy efficiency and the reduction of the carbon footprint.
It is funded by the Artificial Intelligence R&D Missions Program, promoted by the Secretary of State for Digitization and Artificial Intelligence (SEDIA) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation. This program has used funds from the Recovery, Resilience and Transformation Plan to finance the project.
The AgrarIA project focuses on two strategic lines: to investigate the entire value chain of agricultural production, and to also do so in the application of the use of different technologies and AI in the most efficient way possible, and with a neutral carbon footprint. . In addition, he plans develop the AgrarIA platform, in which all the models and components necessary in the value chain of the agricultural sector can be integrated, and process flows integrated with AI technologies necessary for their development can be defined0.
Also other digital enabling technologies for the deployment of unique initiatives or use cases that favor a rapid, efficient, productive and sustainable transformation of the sector in the medium term. This project also seeks to increase the level of digitization of the national agricultural sector, which is very low compared to that of other countries.
These use cases range from solutions for the development of natural products to control pests and diseases as effective as those of chemical synthesis, to the use of collaborative robotics in optimizing the transformation phase of products, through the application of digital twins for the energy efficiency of refrigeration plants.
the future platform It will have a modular and integrated architecture with already developed solutions and that they have their own roadmap. And thanks to the modeling of the solution as a platform, it will be possible to accommodate the specific needs of production processes efficiently and safely, taking advantage of synergies and interacting with external elements. In this way, it will be possible to shape, with partners and end users, heterogeneous and complex initiatives.
