One of the next Star Wars series to air on Disney + will feature the character of Ahsoka Tano. Adored heroine by fans of the saga, she is however not very well known to the general public. In this dossier, we will take stock of everything there is to know about this future project.
Disney + intends to drink Star Wars content in the future with many series. We will of course have the right to follow the adventures of Mando in a season 3, but also to a series on Cassian Andor, on Boba Fett or on Obi-Wan Kenobi.
But one of the most anticipated Star Wars series is Ahsoka. This name speaks to fans of the Extended Universe, but maybe not to those who have only seen the movies (since she doesn’t appear there). If this is your case, don’t panic! In this dossier, we are going to explain to you how this project will deserve your full attention.
Story, characters, cast, release date, we give you a full summary of what we know. As the series is only at the pre-production stage, the information present can vary greatly until release. We will obviously update them if necessary.
When will the Ahsoka series be released?
At the moment, the Ahsoka series has no release date. She has not even started filming yet, since it should probably start in 2022. We should therefore not expect to see her land before 2023. It is far.
Obviously, the series will be broadcast exclusively on Disney +.
Who will be in the cast of the Ahsoka series?
Ahsoka Tano, the heroine of this series, is played by Rosario Dawson (Sin City, Daredevil, Boulevard de la Mort, Alexandre). This won’t be the first time she’s donning her costume, as she once played the Ancient Jedi in an episode of The Mandalorian.
Hayden Christensen will also be present in the role of Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader (through flashbacks, we imagine). The actor will already be donning the costume for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, which is scheduled to air sometime in 2022.
Natasha Liu Bordizzo will play Sabine Wren, Ahsoka’s friend and Mandalorian by trade, while Ivanna Sakhno has for her part been cast for a still unknown role.
Behind the camera, we will find Jon Favreau, handyman from Disney (director of Iron Man, The Lion King, The Mandalorian …), but also and above all Dave Filoni. The latter has become a pillar of Star Wars Universe these last years. He is the creator of The Clone Wars, Rebels and The Bad Batch series. He is also the originator of Ahsoka’s character and worked on season 2 of The Mandalorian as well as The Book of Boba Fett. The series is therefore in good hands.
Will there be a season 2?
For the moment, Disney + only gave the green light for one season. However, if the success is at the rendezvous, it is not impossible that Ahsoka has the right to a rab of episodes. You know the song.
Who is Ahsoka, the heroine of the series, and what is her story?
If you’ve only seen the Star Wars movies, you’ve probably never heard of Ahsoka Tano. She appears for the first time in the animated series The Clone Wars (2008). Its creation is therefore subsequent to the prelogy (1999-2005), which explains its absence on the screen.
She then does his comeback in the animated series Rebels in 2014, then his first steps in live action in episode 5 of season 2 of The Mandalorian in the guise of Rosario Dawson. This appearance allowed Disney to present her to a wider audience. Note that we hear Ahsoka’s voice furtively in The Rise of Skywalker movie, but it’s more of a cameo than anything else.
But who exactly is she? Warning, we are going to spoil The Clone Wars and Rebels series below. If you’re unfamiliar with the Star Wars timeline, our viewing guide might help you navigate it.
During the period of the Republic (prelogy), Ahsoka Tano is a Padawan at the Jedi Temple. During the Clone Wars (between Episode 2 and 3), this young togruta becomes the apprentice of a certain Anakin Skywalker. Together, the two Jedi go on to battle and a strong friendship is born between the master and the student. Over the course of The Clone Wars series, we see her grow and progress.
Towards the end of the war, Ahsoka is wrongly accused of an attack at the Jedi Temple and is excluded from the Order. Although she is ultimately cleared, she decides not to become a Jedi again and leaves Coruscant. This episode takes place shortly before the start of the movie Revenge of the Sith, which justifies its absence from the screen.
After the advent of the Empire, Ahsoka starts a new life underground. She actively participated in the early days of the rebellion under the name of Fulcrum. She thus meets the crew of the Ghost ship (Star Wars Rebels), including Ezra Bridger, but also Sabine Wren, who will be in the cast of the series.
During a clash against Darth Vader, she realizes that the Sith Lord is actually her former master and friend. As the fight turns against her, she is saved in extremis by Ezra. An episode that will undoubtedly be important for the Ahsoka series.
Next, she takes part in the war against Grand Admiral Thrawn. This one is defeated by the rebels. He is banished deep into the galaxy by Ezra, who disappears with him in a heroic sacrifice. At the end of the series, Ahsoka affirms her desire to find the young man in the company of Sabine Wren.
After the fall of the Empire, we reunited with Ahsoka in season 2 of The Mandalorian. She guides Mando and Grogu there, but refuses to train him. We learn that she is still looking for Ezra and Thrawn.
A biography very quickly summarized here. While fans know the character by heart, laymen don’t. We hope that Disney will succeed in making the series accessible and understandable by all.
What will the Ahsoka series tell?
At the moment we have no no details on the script for the Ahsoka series. Two possibilities: the first is that Lucasfilm decides to tell a new adventure of Ahsoka Tano while ignoring his past, which would bring together all audiences. Thus, the episodes could take place either after The Mandalorian, or before, during his period of hiding, for example.
The second would be to pick up the story of the heroine where we left off, which would risk losing the laymen. In this second case, the Ahsoka series would therefore tell us the quest to find Ezra Bridger. We could follow the ancient Jedi, gathering clues across the galaxy in order to locate him. An interesting postulate, but which would remind us too much of the history of the Force Awakens.
Is it worth watching The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels if you want to know more about Ahsoka?
Yes. The Clone Wars and Rebels series are very different from each other, but are both high quality and engaging. The Clone Wars takes place between episode 2 and 3 and, as its name suggests, it stages the Clone Wars. We follow different characters, including Ahsoka and Anakin, during the conflict. The series works in terms of arcs of one, two, three or even four episodes that are independent of each other.
If the first seasons may seem a little childish (the series was oriented towards young people in its beginnings), things change over the episodes. The stories told are all interesting, the introduced characters well written and you can feel the love of its creator Dave Filoni for the saga. We meet a lot of iconic heroes. Season 7 is simply a wonder.
The Clone Wars has seven seasons in all. All episodes are available on Disney +. Note that The Bad Batch (one season) is a spin-off.
Rebels is a little different, since its history is more linear. It takes place between episode 3 and 4, so during the reign of the Empire. We follow Ezra Bridger, a young orphan from the planet Lothal. He will join the crew of the Ghost, a contraband vessel, which will gradually join the rebellion.
Like The Clone Wars, Rebels evolve over time. The first two seasons are indeed very childish while the following two are more adult, even downright dramatic. This series allows us to discover the fate of Ahsoka after the Clone Wars, the former Jedi having a very important place there.
Rebels was also the occasion for Dave Filoni to continue certain arcs started in The Clone Wars… stories that were later picked up in The Mandalorian, like that of Bo-Katan and the Dark Saber. All four seasons are available on Disney +.
Two excellent series, therefore, that we invite you to discover and which intelligently complement the universe around the films.
