All the options to customize your iPad dock

How to customize the dock

The dock is a really important part of iPadOS to quickly access those applications that are the most used. This can be comfortably customized to suit all the particular needs you have when using your device.

Add new apps

As we have commented previously, the dock is fully customizable, allowing you to add applications to your liking. It can be quite similar to what you have on a Mac where you have much faster access to all applications. It should be borne in mind at first that there is not a very narrow limit when it comes to introducing applications to the dock. That is, you can enter practically all the ones you use on a day-to-day basis. The only problem you will face is that the icons will reduce their size.

The latter is logical since, if you want to have many applications in a very specific space of the length of the iPad, you must make the icon smaller. This a priori can be a problem, and that is why you should always be careful with the vision you want to have of your dock and not fill it with all the applications. In order to carry out this customization process, you simply have to carry out the following steps:

  • On the iPad screen, press and hold the application that you want to place on the dock.
  • Click on ‘Edit home screen’.
  • Press and hold the application again and drag it to the dock at the bottom to the position you want.
  • Finally, click on Ok at the top right.

Delete apps you don’t use

As we have commented previously, we must take into account the aesthetics of the dock. When there are many applications on it, its icon becomes much smaller and can be awkward. We must always recommend having those applications that you need to access with a certain frequency, such as the email manager, but omit those that you do not use. If this is your case and there is an app that you don’t use so often anymore, you can easily remove it from the dock.

Removing the applications from the dock does not mean that they are completely uninstalled from the system. They simply move to the main screen of the iPad without any extra inconvenience. Specifically, in order to remove these applications from the dock, the following steps must be followed:

  • On the iPad screen, press and hold that application in the dock that you want to make disappear from there.
  • Click on ‘Edit home screen’.
  • Press and hold the application again and drag it to the screen that you want it to be.
  • Finally, click on Ok at the top right.

Change the established order

The order of the applications in the dock itself can be easily modified. All these tools are to suit your own tastes. On many occasions you want to have an alphabetical order or by use and at any time you can do it in a comfortable way. At the time of moving the rest of applications. To be able to do it, the procedure is quite similar to the one we have commented previously, since you will simply have to follow the following steps:

  1. On the iPad screen, press and hold the application on the dock that you want to move to another location.
  2. Click on ‘Edit home screen’.
  3. Press and hold the app again and drag it horizontally across the entire dock to the position you want and release it at that moment.
  4. Finally, click on Ok at the top right.

Settings for adding apps automatically

By default Apple configures the dock to its own liking with its own applications. Those that you think you will use more frequently. As we have commented previously, there are many existing systems to be able to make changes in the way of introducing the applications in a comfortable way. There are ways to introduce different applications automatically according to your particular needs.

Show recent and suggested apps

The artificial intelligence of the iPad is capable of automatically adding to the dock those applications that you use the most or that you have recently used. This works in a really interesting way, and if you use an application at a specific time, it will always be displayed in the dock. For example, in your notes, you might use your iPad to watch content on Netflix or a similar service. When the time comes when you usually open it, it will appear in the dock.

Aesthetically, you will see these applications specifically on the right side of this bottom bar. It differs from the original dock through a small vertical line that clearly distinguishes two application blocks. This usually means that on many occasions you see that these app icons look totally different, changing automatically. It is undoubtedly a very good option to have apps automatically and that you usually use.

To be able to activate this specific option, simply follow the following steps:

  1. Enter the iPad Settings.
  2. On the left side, click on ‘Home screen and dock’.
  3. Activate the option ‘Show recent and suggested apps in the dock’.

View the app library

From version of iPadOS 15 onwards, on the iPad you can find a library of applications built into the computer that is very similar to the one that can be found on the iPhone itself. If you decide to activate this option you will find this option in the right corner of the dock. By clicking on it, you will be able to view a section dedicated to all the folders that contain the applications inside. This is a classification that is carried out automatically and intelligently, easily dividing all the installations that you do. This makes the dock much richer and much more productive by having all these applications concentrated.

Although this option is almost always activated, the truth is that sometimes it may not appear. The activation process is relatively simple, since you simply have to perform the following steps:

  1. Enter the iPad Settings.
  2. On the left side, click on ‘Home screen and dock’.
  3. Activate the option ‘Show app library in the dock’.

When activated, in the dock you will see a folder with all the applications you have installed. The position of this cannot be edited in any way, always remaining in the right corner. The truth is that it should not be a problem since it is well located to be able to quickly access any situation with your finger while you are working with it.
