Yet this is the promise at the heart of Elon Musk’s proposal: to reduce road congestion on the surface, by digging tunnels under cities. In the vision of the businessman, the cars that use these tunnels must be able to go from the entrance to the exit without having to suffer slowdowns.
The prototype tested in Las Vegas has several flaws. On the one hand, it is not very wide: there is roughly room for rolling a vehicle. Which explains why the journalists weren’t driving: it was a professional driver behind the wheel. Above all, what caused the underground plugs ultimately has little to do with the tunnel itself.

The parking areas were quickly congested due to the number of people to be transported. Passengers taking longer than expected to get out of their vehicle, and parking spaces not being numerous enough, that explains the traffic jams in the tunnels…
This unfortunate experience has at least identified a problem that the Boring Company will have to solve if it wants to “sell” its tunnels elsewhere in the world!
