Amazon Announces New Solar Power Projects and Exceeds 1.15 GW of Renewable Capacity

Amazon has announced that it will launch new solar energy projects that will add more than 630 MW of capacity to the grid that will exceed 1.15 GW of renewable capacity in Spain.

Amazon keep moving forward in your environmental commitment with the announcement of new projects to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040.

In total, the company has announced 18 new solar and wind energy projects in Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland and the United States, with which it expects to add 5.6 GW of renewable energy to the grid. In this way, the firm advances in its objective of supplying 100% of its activities with renewable energy in 2025, five years before its initial commitment marked for 2030.

Four of these 18 projects are scheduled to be carried out in Spain: one in Castilla-La Mancha, two in Extremadura, and one in the Community of Madrid. With these four projects, Amazon plans to expand the capacity of its network by more than 630 MW, thus exceeding 1.15 GW of renewable capacity in our country and complementing the five solar plants located in Andalusia, Extremadura, Aragón and Castilla-La Mancha.

This is explained by Kara Hurst, vice president of global sustainability at Amazon, for whom this announcement is part of the company’s line of reducing net carbon emissions as one of the measures to face the climate crisis. “The significant investments we are making in renewable energy globally are an important step towards meeting The Climate Pledge, our commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040, ten years before the Paris Agreement ”Hurst emphasizes.

In this sense, the person in charge is optimistic about the implications that these initiatives will have since “Renewable energy projects generate, in turn, new investments, jobs related to sustainability and promote the decarbonization of electrical systems in communities around the world”.

Amazon, the largest buyer of renewable energy

In addition to the start-up of these four projects in Spain, Amazon will tackle eight new projects in the United States, adding more than 1 GW of capacity in renewable energy with photovoltaic installations in addition to the 6 GW it already has through 62 projects.

Likewise, it will also have four new renewable energy projects in the Nordic countries to add 158 MW of renewable energy in this region, increasing its capacity to 950 MW.

Alongside these, Amazon will also launch additional projects in Italy and Northern Ireland. In the case of the first, it will allow adding 40 MW to the 66 MW already enabled in the country while, in the case of Northern Ireland, the new wind project increases its capacity to 245 MW in the islands of Ireland and up to 545 MW in the UK.

With these announcements, Amazon reaffirms itself as the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in the world, with 274 projects globally including 105 commercial-scale wind and solar projects and 169 solar roofs in installations and Amazon stores distributed all over the world.
