Amazon could be the next French Cup broadcaster

Could Amazon broadcast future French Football Cup matches? After getting their hands on the rights to Ligue 1, Jeff Bezos’ firm may well be interested in this other tournament, to the detriment of France Télévisions.

Amazon Prime Video

The French Football Cup is broadcast on France Télévisions and Eurosport, but that could change next season. As revealed by the Team, Amazon would be in the starting blocks to recover the broadcasting rights.

According to the sports newspaper, the French Football Federation (FFF) would be very “disappointed by the exposure and the quality of the programs” currently, and could therefore choose to change dairy. Clearly, the Coupe de France is not highlighted enough. That’s good, since a new call for tenders will take place soon.

The Coupe de France could join Ligue 1 on Amazon

The final of the Coupe de France 2022 will take place on May 8 at the Stade de France and will oppose Nice to Nantes. After this date, the rights will be put back on the market and a new call for tenders will be launched. The FFF could well favor Amazon instead of the public service on this one if the proposed contract is interesting.

The only condition: that the rights be granted at least at the same rate as today, or 22 million euros per year. A sum that can easily be released by Amazon. L’Equipe finally specifies that the objective is to seek a paying broadcaster, but with the possibility of sub-letting the rights to a free channel. Enough to be in line with the philosophy of the competition, which wants to reach as many people as possible.

Amazon Prime Video has already been broadcasting Ligue 1 since the start of the 2021-2022 season. If many were skeptical about this choice at first, the platform finally convinced, in particular thanks to an interesting offer, quality commentators as well as considerable flexibility linked to the format. For the American company, recovering the rights to the Coupe de France would allow it to take control of all of French professional football, but also to fill in the gaps when there is no championship match. Case to follow.
