Amazon Fire TV 4K Max, analysis

“Lately my Smart TV is very slow and some applications do not work well, what do you recommend?”. For the past few years, my usual response to this question has been a Amazon Fire TV Stick And, in my experience, few users are disappointed. Not in vain, I think it is one of the technological products with the best relation between quality, price and performance.

I have had the opportunity to test the new Amazon Fire TV 4K Max for a few days, “The best Fire TV Stick yet” In the words of Amazon and that is presented as a fantastic option for your old TV to go back to being “Smart”. Before continuing, a brief look at its technical specifications:

Amazon Fire TV 4K Max, specifications

  • Quad Core Processor (1.8 GHz CPU, 750 MHz GPU)
  • 2 Gbytes RAM
  • 8 Gbytes storage
  • Dolby Atmos support
  • HDR10, HDR10 +, Dolby Vision
  • WiFi 6 connectivity, 802.11a / b / g / n / ac / ax
  • Up to 4K UHD 60 fps (3840 x 2160 pixels)
  • Price 64.99 euros (now on sale for 38.99 euros)

Like its predecessors, the Amazon Fire TV 4K Max It is a solution that includes an HDMI dongle to connect to a television or monitor along with a remote control to control all its functions comfortably and without using the phone.

The hardware (better processor, more RAM memory) has been significantly improved compared to the previous version and everything feels faster and more agileespecially in demanding scenarios with 4K HDR content at 60fps. The manufacturer estimates the improvement at 40% and, although we cannot assure it, there is a notable improvement that becomes stratospheric if we compare with the first iterations of the device.

At the connectivity level, the new Amazon Fire TV 4K Max boasts support WiFi 6, an important or even decisive leap in some scenarios but that requires a network to match and a router of a certain quality (normally, not the one that the operator “gives away”).

Just take a look at the control knob to realize the importance of Alexa for Amazon. On paper, just press it and tell the assistant what you want to see or what you want to hear, but we can go much further if we have more compatible devices at home, such as smart lights, locks or surveillance cameras. In practice, and I don’t know if the same thing happens to you, I feel strange giving voice commands and I end up surrendering to the practicality of the buttons on the remote control.

Fire TVs are obviously the ideal platform to enter the Amazon ecosystem, but the company does not put almost limitations Let’s go further: we can install Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Disney +, DAZN, Atresplayer, Mitele, Spotify or Apple Music, among others, without complications and in just a few minutes. Unfortunately, the inexplicable absence of HBO (now HBO Max) remains, although there are unofficial ways to install them by Google.

The interface, recently redesigned for all devices in the Fire family, is very visual and easy to use. Yes indeed, we would like to see a little less advertising or, at least, allowing us to choose how and where it is displayed. It is not especially annoying, but it does attract attention if you come from other systems such as Apple TV or Nvidia Shield.

As an interesting addition, there is a button dedicated to live broadcasts on the remote that will take us to the television guide. In a very careful interface, we will have at our disposal all the content that is being broadcast on the different platforms that we have contracted, as well as see what will be broadcast in the coming days. It works perfectly with Movistar, Atresplayer or Mitele, among others.

I buy it?

After a few days testing the device I think the Amazon Fire TV 4K Max is one of the best devices in its category. More evolution than revolution, it is limited to not touching what already worked and improving some aspects such as performance, connectivity and interface.

If you have a Smart TV with a few years on top, with an operating system that has stopped updating or that has simply been reducing its performance, I think the Fire TV 4K Max is a great buy. The exception is that your TV is not 4K; in that case I would opt for a more basic – and cheaper – Fire TV model.

Recommend upgrade to those who already own a Fire TV It depends on where they come from; There are no relevant changes since the latest releases, but if we have one of the first and we have made the leap to a 4K TV and we have platforms capable of serving high-quality content, we will notice the difference.
