The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Phoebe Waller-Bridge, as part of her deal with Amazon Studios, will write a new adaptation of the iconic Tomb Raider video game franchise. Tomb Raider has already been adapted for the screen. Lara was played by Angelina Jolie in two films in the early 2000s and by Alicia Vikander in a more recent film.

Vikander and the film’s producers were eager for a sequel, even signing Misha Green to direct, but the plans fell through, resulting in the rights being put up for sale. Netflix then planned an animated series Tomb Raider, but it would now be Amazon’s turn to work on its own original series. It is not yet known who will play the main rolebut don’t expect movie stars Angelina Jolie or Alicia Vikander to reprise the role of Lara Croft.

Tomb Raider is coming to Amazon Prime Video

While The Last of Us is currently enjoying huge success on HBO, and on Prime Video in France, we imagine that Amazon has realized that certain television adaptations of video games are highly anticipated by fans. Prime Video is currently developing a series on God of War and, according to rumours, a series on Mass Effect.

For those unfamiliar with Amazon’s chosen producer for Tomb Raider, Waller-Bridger rose to prominence through Fleabag, an acclaimed BBC sitcom based on her one-woman show of the same name. Fleabag’s success landed Waller-Bridger an overall deal with Amazon Studios, which also includes another detective series that may or may not still be on the schedule. Amazon is also planning a Tomb Raider movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter, but we imagine it won’t be directed by the same person.

While waiting for the series, we also know that Amazon is preparing a brand new Tomb Raider video game, developed by Crystal Dynamics. The latter will use the new Unreal Engine 5 graphics engine, and should even offer a co-op mode.
