Amazon has announced a new benefit for Amazon Prime subscribers. It consists of access to a complete music catalog with 100 million songs (instead of the previous selection limited to 2 million songs) and the availability of most of their best podcasts, free and without advertising.
This enhancement to Amazon Music, available for free to Amazon Prime customers, is an attack on the waterline of dedicated services such as Spotify or Apple Music and, at the same time, a new enhancement that increases interest in its general subscription service and compensates the recent price increase.
The growth of the number of songs to 100 million titles, puts the basic service on the same level as Amazon Prime Unlimited, an ad-free premium service with additional payment, with song downloads for offline use and better audio, CD quality “without lossy” and higher qualities up to 24 bits and 192kHz. Additionally, it includes thousands of songs in Dolby Atmos and 360 Reality Audio expertly mixed for greater definition and depth than stereo sound.
Nevertheless, the basic Prime Music service may be enough for many as well as multiplying by 50 the number of songs available, it will offer ad-free podcasts which will put pressure on others like Spotify, whose paying subscriber base is increasingly frustrated that they have yet to listen to podcast ads, despite paying for the service.
In addition to more ad-free songs and podcasts, the Amazon Music app has been revamped with a new “Podcast Previews” feature that will allow customers to listen to short clips as a way to discover new podcasts they might like.
Amazon Prime, is it worth it?
Absolutely yes. From September 15, 2022, the price of new subscriptions increased in Spain from 36 to 49 euros per year. A significant increase, true, but it must be mentioned that it was the first increase since August 2018 and that since then Amazon has increased both the services related to those of the e-commerce platform’s products and the rest it offers and that they have to do with storage or entertainment.
