Amazon workers vote to join union next month

Workers at an Amazon warehouse on Staten Island in New York, as it became known yesterday, will hold a union vote as early as next month. Derrick Palmer of Amazon Labor Union, an independent group that seeks to represent workers in JFK8, says the election will run from March 25 to 30. And if you don’t know the whole story, the workers resubmitted the union’s petition to the National Labor Relations Board last December shortly after failing to get enough signatures in their previous attempt, apparently aided by the trade and tech giant’s management. .

This time, workers have reached the union vote threshold, which is typically 30 percent of the workforce. It is important to note that the US National Labor Relations Administration accused Amazon of threatening, spying and interrogating workers who are members of the aforementioned union, as well as about to join it, in order to dissuade them from this kind of association. The company’s union prevention consultant reportedly called the organizers “thugs” and said the union campaign would fail.

“We remain extremely skeptical that there are enough legitimate signatures to support this election petition. But since the National Labor Relations Board has decided that elections will take place, we want our employees’ voices to be heard as soon as possible. Our employees have always had the choice to join a union or not, and we remain focused on working directly with our team to make Amazon a great place to work,” Kelly Nantel, an Amazon spokesperson, told Engadget.

And by the way, a little earlier this month, workers from another warehouse of the company, located in Staten Island, submitted a petition to the same organization with a request to unionize. Another union vote is taking place at a facility in Bessemer, Alabama. The National Labor Relations Administration called a repeat election on site shortly after it was determined that Amazon had interfered in the first vote, in which a vast majority of employees voted against unionization. Votes will be counted from March 28.
