AMD is determined to stand up to Apple in the laptop sector, so it has officially announced its Ryzen 7040U series of processors, of which there is one model, the Ryzen 7 7840Uwhich is intended for compete with the Apple M2. This is the company’s second big announcement for the segment after some Ryzen Z1 that are aimed at portable consoles with x86 architecture.
It should not be forgotten that Apple has revolutionized the laptop sector with its own ARM-based processors, which have been positioned, at least on paper, as the best combination of professional performance and long autonomy. But AMD is not willing to back down and wants to offer that combination of power and efficiency as well, but without abandoning the x86 architecture.
AMD has published a graph in which you can see a comparison between the Ryzen 7 7840U and the Apple M2. Here the Ryzen processor is shown to be superior in web browsing, image editing, 3D rendering and responsiveness, but above all in multithreading and in the Passmark 10 performance test, where it has outperformed its rival by 72% and 75%. % respectively.
AMD can’t forget its longtime rival, Intel, with which it also shares a lot (it’s not for nothing that software compiled for x86 works on both companies’ processors). Here the red giant has decided target the Intel Core i7-1360P, which has been compared to the Ryzen 7 7840U both at the application level and graphics processing. In the former, which has spanned content creation, web browsing, productivity, the Passmark test, and multimedia rendering, AMD’s processor is consistently superior, especially in Passmark and multimedia rendering, areas in which it betters its rival from Intel by 89% and 128% respectively.
When it comes to the performance of integrated graphics, AMD does not hesitate to show off its clear superiority, although it must be taken into account that the graphics have been made by the same company. The Radeon 780M integrated graphics used by the Ryzen 7 7840U are always better than the Xe of the Intel Core i7-1360P, reaching close to double in World of Tanks Encore and more than double over Cyberpunk 2077. The resolution used was 1080p and the graphic quality was low in all cases.
The data coming from AMD promises that the Ryzen 7040U series of processors will put the company in a very good position within the laptop sector, not only against Intel, but apparently also lays the foundation to compete with an Apple that plays in its own league at the technological level, but it faces Acer, HP, Lenovo and others when it comes to selling equipment.
Although the Ryzen 7840U has focused attention, AMD has announced four models, of which we are now going to expose their basic characteristics:
- AMD Ryzen 7 7840U: eight cores, sixteen threads, 3.3GHz base frequency, 5.1GHz maximum working speed, 24MB cache, 15-30W TDP, and integrated Radeon 780M graphics based on RDNA 3 architecture and 12 drives computer (CU). It features Ryzen’s artificial intelligence acceleration technology.
- AMD Ryzen 5 7640U: Six cores, twelve threads, 3.5GHz base frequency, 4.9GHz maximum working speed, 22MB cache, 15-30W TDP, and integrated Radeon 760M graphics based on RDNA 3 architecture with 8 CUs . It features Ryzen’s artificial intelligence acceleration technology.
- AMD Ryzen 5 7540U: 6 cores, 12 threads, 3.2GHz base frequency, 4.9GHz maximum working speed, 22MB cache, 15-30W TDP, and integrated Radeon 740M graphics based on RDNA 3 architecture with 4 CUs .
- AMD Ryzen 3 7440U: four cores, eight threads, 3.0GHz base frequency, 4.7GHz maximum working speed, 12MB cache, 15-30W TDP, and integrated Radeon 740M graphics based on RDNA 3 architecture with 4 CUs .
As we have already said, we only have the AMD version here, so it remains to be seen the performance that the processors really offer once they reach users and are tested by reference benchmarkers. But regardless of the result, it is clear that AMD’s strategist for the immediate future is going to bet heavily on portable devices, whether or not they are directly oriented to playing video games.
