AMD HIP SDK Now Available: Easily Convert CUDA Applications to C++

The AMD HIP SDK is now officially available as part of the ROCm ecosystem of the Sunnyvale giant, and its most important novelty is, as we have told you in the title, that it is designed to work with CUDA applications, but in a very particular way. , since it is not a compatibility or emulation layer, but rather is designed to turn them into compatible applications with professional and consumer graphics cards, and even on the integrated GPUs used by AMD APUs.

This new development kit allows easily port a CUDA-based application and convert it into a simplified C++ codebase, which can be compiled to run on AMD and NVIDIA GPUs. As I told you at the beginning, best of all, this development kit works with both Radeon and Radeon Pro graphics cards, and also with integrated GPUs in APUs, which makes it a solution with a degree of compatibility. and very high support, and it will not be necessary to have a very expensive graphics card to be able to take advantage of it.

Working with the AMD HIP SDK is very easy, so much so that we can do it intuitively from the first minute and without having to contact AMD for support. We will also have conversion tools for GPU-accelerated graphics and simulation that will use the AMD hardware that we have installed on our equipment.

Among the graphics solutions supported by the AMD HIP SDK are:

  • Radeon VII.
  • Radeon RX Vega Series.
  • Radeon RX 5000 Series.
  • Radeon RX 6000 Series.
  • Radeon RX 7000 Series.
  • Radeon Pro WX 9100.
  • Radeon Pro W6000 Series.
  • Radeon Pro W7000 Series.

In order to use this kit we will need to have the latest available drivers installed for our graphics card depending on the model we use. There is no major problem because we can download them for free through the official AMD website, and in a matter of seconds. The installation process of the new drivers will not take you more than a few minutes. This development kit is completely free and follows the Open-Source premises.
