AMD protects itself from Intel: new RX GPUs with faster memory

The filtering seems to be coming true again. And it is that AMD is also going to react in its own way to the threat of Intel and its Alchemist GPUs, which seem to be going to break into the market doing a lot of damage to their rivals. The “hype” is already created just by seeing how the reds and greens get to work, which means that in the case of Lisa Su, several RX models will arrive: RX6950XT, RX6850XT, RX6850 and RX6750XT.

Just yesterday we talked about this rumor focused on a supposed improvement in the performance of AMD GPUs thanks to new 18 Gbps VRAM modules, as included in the new RX 6500 XT (price shot already, by the way). Today the rumors are much sharper and claim that the Navi 21 and Navi 22 chips will have a new life in models with a different nomenclature.

We enter directly into the field of speculation, so take a little salt before anything else and just in case. There is no leak (at the moment), but it is very strange that AMD intends to bring “new” models to the market with the same chip as the existing ones and only with the improvement of the VRAM calling them specifically: RX6950XT, RX6850XT, RX6850 and RX6750XT.

As we say, a priori there is no change other than the fact that we would go from the current 16 Gbps to 18 Gbps modules, which on the other hand and as it could happen, would come from Samsung as chips that have not passed the qualification to the new speeds of 20Gbps and 24Gbps, that is, a full-fledged binning focusing on the downclocking so as not to lose money on each wafer.

Just an improvement in GDDR6 VRAM? Or something else?

GDDR6 background circuit

It would be strange if instead of replacing the current models with others with a simpler name or directly specifying it on the box or with the name 18G, for example, AMD decides to launch these four models with those names.

Our speculation (and we may be wrong) is that they could take advantage of the new node to TSMC 6nm to achieve higher frequencies with the same consumption as the current models, achieving, together with the increase in MHz of the GDDR6, a performance close to two digits in each GPU of the new RX 6×50 XT range.

There would only be one case that would remain up in the air: the RX 6900 XT LC, AMD’s current top of the range and which already included 18 Gbps memory, where it also achieved a Boost of up to 2,435 MHz. Apparently the supposed RX 6950 XT did not it would be faster than this, although by a little, but it could reduce in some watt than another the 330W that consumes the LC version.

If this were not the case and indeed the RX 6950 XT is positioned as the fastest AMD card, it would mean that it has surpassed those almost 2.5 GHz fully standard, something that could only be achieved with the improvement of the node or by further shooting consumption if it remained at the current 7nm.
