AMD Radeon: What’s New in the 6000 Series

If we have already seen the news regarding the Ryzen 6000 series presented today at CES 2022, now is the time to talk about Radeon, because AMD graphics adapters have also had a great importance in the presentation from the company this afternoon. And there is news both in terms of laptops and desktops, with particularly good news for those who are considering a change in graphics and want something from the entry range but compatible with the most current technologies from AMD.

Regarding laptops, AMD’s proposal is five new Radeon RX 6000M Series GPUs, as well as the new Radeon RX 6000S Series, which add up to a total of eight new adapters that laptop manufacturers will be able to integrate into their computers. Here’s what’s new in the Radeon 6000 series_

Model Process CU Frequency Memory TGP Bandwidth
Radeon RX 6850M XT 7 NM 40 2.463 MHz 12 GB GDDR 6 165W 432 GB / s
Radeon RX 6650M XT 7 NM 32 2,162 MHz 8GB GDDR 6 120W 256 GB / s
Radeon RX 6650M 7 NM 28 2,222 MHz 8GB GDDR 6 120W 256 GB / s
Radeon RX 6500M 6 NM 16 2,191 MHz 4GB GDDR 6 50W 288 GB / s
Radeon RX 6300M 6NM 12 1,512 MHz 2GB GDDR 6 25W 288 GB / s
Radeon RX 6800S 7 NM 32 1,975 MHz 8GB GDDR 6 100W 256 GB / s
Radeon RX 6700S 7 NM 28 1,890 MHz 8GB GDDR 6 80W 244 GB / s
Radeon RX 6600S 7 NM 28 1,881 MHz 4GB GDDR 6 80W 244 GB / s

As you can see, we can distinguish in three large groups. In the first place we find the models with the last name XT, which indicates that they are the models with the highest performance, Thus, the top of the range is found in the RX 6850M XT, with its 40 compute units and its 12 gigabytes of RAM. At a high cost in terms of consumption, yes, because as you can see in the table above, we are talking about a graph with a TGP of 165 watts.

The next segment of the M family we jump to six nanometers, and in it we find the RX 6500M and RX 6300M. As you can see, with these AMD models they show a much lower consumption than their “older sisters”, but they make the most of the potential of six nanometers.

And back at seven nanometers we find the S family, specifically designed by AMD for slim form factor systems, but that they will be used to play and perform tasks that require good graphic performance, either to play games or for other tasks in which it has an important weight. In addition, as you can see, its consumption indicates that energy efficiency has also been an important factor in its design.

AMD Radeon: What's New in the 6000 Series

Radeon RX 6500 XT and RX 6400

If so far we have seen Radeon’s proposal in relation to laptops, now is the time to see what was AMD reserved for desktops, and is that there are also novelties of the 6000 series on the desktop, with two new models of the entry range. These are its technical specifications:

Model CU Frequency Memory TGP Bandwidth
RX 6500 XT 16 2,815 MHz 4 GB DDR6 107W 144 GB / s
RX 6400 12 2,321 MHz 4 GB DDR6 53W 128 GB / s

With its arrival on the market scheduled for next January 19, as you can see we are talking about two input models, which seem specially designed to compete with the NVIDIA GTX family, and that in addition to offering access to the latest AMD technologies, it does so with a recommended sale price that makes them a groundbreaking proposition. And is that for the US market, AMD has announced that the Radeon RX 6500 XT will be priced at just $ 199. It will be necessary to see, of course, if it is possible to get hold of it at that price.
