AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D: performance and comparison against the Intel Core i9-13900K

The Ryzen 9 7950X3D has not yet reached the market, but thanks to the leak of the official AMD review guide, we have been able to see numerous performance data. All that data they are official because they come from AMD itself, so they are not an estimate or a rumor, they are the result of the Sunnyvale company’s own tests.

The performance data is divided into two large groups those for synthetic performance and professional applications, which are tests where a large amount of L3 cache typically has little or no impact, and those for performance in games, which is where that extra cache does usually make a difference, although not always. This is a topic that I have already told you on more than one occasion, and that we must take into account when evaluating this type of processor.

Before going into the performance data, let’s review the Ryzen 9 7950X3D specs:

  • Zen architecture 4.
  • Manufactured on TSMC’s 5nm node.
  • 16 cores and 32 threads at 4.2GHz-5.7GHz, normal and turbo mode.
  • 16MB L2 cache.
  • 128MB L3 cache.
  • 120 watt TDP.
  • Socket AM5.
  • DDR5 compatible.

Ryzen 9 7950X performance: 6% faster than Intel Core i9-13900K

The leaked information confirms that, on average, andl Ryzen 9 7950X3D is 6% faster than Intel Core i9-13900K in games when using a GeForce RTX 4090, and 5.6% more powerful when using a Radeon RX 7900 XTX. It is important that you keep in mind that the tests have been done in 1080p to generate high CPU dependencyand that those differences will be greatly reduced in 1440p, and that they will be practically non-existent in 4K.

Ryzen 9 7950X3D performance in games

The Ryzen 9 7950X3D wins especially clearly in games like Horizon Zero Dawn, where it achieves 289 FPS compared to 228 for the Intel Core i9-13900K, and also in others like F1 2021, Rainbow Six Siege and Guardians of the Galaxy, but loses in titles like CS:GO, Cyberpunk 2077 and Far Cry 6, and ties at Watch Dogs Legion.

In synthetic performance the results They are very interesting. The Ryzen 9 7950X3D wins in some tests, such as 7Zip and DolphineBench, but loses in Cinebench R23 (both single-threaded and multi-threaded). He also loses in Geekbench 5.4.1 and Kraken Benchmark v1.1 Edge Chromium.

Price, release date and first impressions

The launch of the Ryzen 9 7950X3D will take place next February 28th, and in principle it will be accompanied by the Ryzen 9 7900X3D and Ryzen 7 7800X3D. It will be compatible with all current AM5 motherboards, but a BIOS update will be required to use it, so keep this in mind.

We do not know the sale price that it will have in Spain, but AMD confirmed during the official presentation event for the presentation of the Ryzen 7000X3D that the Ryzen 9 7950X3D will have a price in the United States of $699, taxes not includedso in Spain it should be around 800 euros, VAT included.

Would it be an interesting option at that price? Well no, especially taking into account the slight difference in performance with the Intel Core i9-13900K, which beats it in some cases, and its price, which is around 649 euros at most retailers.

I think it’s pretty clear that this leak it has significantly punctured expectations that the Ryzen 7000X3D had generated, and that in the end its performance is too close to Intel’s Core Gen13, and in resolutions higher than 1080p the difference between the two will be almost nil as I have already told you before. I don’t think many people buy a Ryzen 9 7950X3D and a GeForce RTX 4090 to play 1080p, so the story tells itself.
