AMD’s future RX 7900 XT graphics card could carry 24 GB of memory

One thing we know about AMD’s upcoming RX 7000 graphics cards is that some of their models won’t be monolithic. Rather, its main chip will be made up of several chips. What has given infinity of rumors about what the organization and composition would be. In particular, based on patents that have been appearing in the last year and that have been assigned to Lisa Su’s company. All of them contradict each other. And we cannot forget that they not only have the Radeon for gaming, but also the Instinct for high-performance computing.

Well, in the face of future RX 7000 it seems that the latest information has taken a 180ยบ turn, although to clarify it it is better to remember what we know. AMD will divide its graphics card into two different chips, on the one hand, the so-called GCD will be in charge of graphic processing. On the other hand, the MCD would be in charge of communicating with the outside, that is, with the VRAM memory and the PCI Express port. However, the latest information has turned all speculation upside down.

6 MCD and 1 GCD, this would be the potential configuration of the RX 7900 XT

Yes, everything would point to the fact that the potential configuration of the RX 7900 XT would not be as it had been speculated until now. Where the rumor mill spoke that the main GPU would be divided into several GCDs. According to the latest rumours, everything would indicate that although we would have 7 chipletsaltogether 6 of them would be the MCDs to communicate with the GDDR6 memory and the GCD would be a huge central chip.

Rumor RX 7900 XT RDNA 3 6 MCD 1 GCD setup

So, in the new setup, which at the moment is still a rumor. The L3 cache partitions would be found inside each of the MCDs. Let’s not forget that there is a direct correlation between the number of memory chips, the number of L2 and L3 cache partitions. This last one called Infinity Cache. The latest rumors pointed to a change in the specifications of the future RX 7000. With the new information that has been leaked, the change is total.

Having 6 MCDs to communicate the central GCD with the VRAM indicates a number of multiple memory chips of 6. Are we looking at a potential 384 bit bus compared to the 256 bits that had been rumored so far? This would lead us to models with 24 GB of memory. It would make sense since it is the capacity that is expected in the high-end NVIDIA. On the other hand, we cannot forget the recent AMD patents, where it is precisely described what would be an MCD with V-Cache placed vertically as an Infinity Cache Y a processor to accelerate Deep Learning algorithms. Of course, this last point has not been confirmed in the drivers yet.
