Andor: release date, number of episodes, history, all about the intriguing Star Wars series

Andor is one of the upcoming Star Wars series on Disney+. The platform is banking heavily on it and for good reason: it will be important for the extended universe. In this file, we will explain why and also take stock of the essential things that there is to know about it. Let’s go !

Andor

The new Eldorado of Star Wars is not in the cinema, but on the small screen! Disney relies heavily on serieswe saw it with The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett or Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Next on the list is Andor. It will follow the fate of Cassian Andor, the rebel spy who appeared in the movie Rogue One. It will be a prequel. It doesn’t look like that, but it’s a very important series for Lucasfilm. It will indeed be the perfect excuse to develop the extended universe as much as possible.

In this file, we are going to take stock of everything that we know about this series. We will also try to explain why you should not miss it under any circumstances if you like Star Wars. Let’s go !

When will Andor air?

The first two episodes of the Andor series will be available on August 31, 2022. Then we will have the right to one episode per week, every Wednesday. A strategy that allows you to create a continuous “hype” and above all to keep subscribers longer. It has proven itself with previous Star Wars and Marvel creations.

Where to watch the Andor series?

Like all Star Wars series, Andor will be broadcast on Disney+. Access to the streaming platform requires a subscription. As a reminder, the subscription is fixed at 8.99 euros per month or at 89.90 euros per year.

How many episodes will the first season of Andor have?

Andor’s first season will count 12 episodes. That’s a lot for a Star Wars series. We recall that The Mandalorian has 8 episodes per season, The Book of Boba Fett seven and Obi-Wan Kenobi only six. A length justified by Lucasfilm, which claims that there is a lot to tell in this new series.

How many seasons will Andor have?

Disney has already announced that Andor will consist of two seasons of twelve episodes each.

Andor will show us new planets

The series will take place before Rogue One. Showrunner Tony Gilroy explained that the first season would tell us how the character of Cassian Andor became what he is. In the second, we will follow his journey as a spy until the events of the film. The last scene of the last episode of the series should also make the link with the feature film of 2016, we are promised. Of course there will be no season 3.

Who will be in the cast of Andor?

As in the movie Rogue One (2016), Cassian Andor is played by Diego Luna. We have seen the Mexican actor in several films, such as Elysium or A Rainy Day in New York. He is no stranger to the world of series. It is indeed he who held the first role in Narcos Mexico (Netflix).

The series can also count on Genevieve O’Reilly, reprising her role as Mom Mothma, the Rebel Senator she played in Episode 3 and Rogue One.

Other well-known names are added to this cast, such as Stellan Skarsgard (Thor, Dune), Anton Valensi or even Robert Emms (Chernobyl). Note that Alan Tudyk, who played the droid K-2SO in Rogue One (the personal droid and friend of Cassian), will not be there… at least in season 1.

The series is overseen by Tony Gilroy, an eminent screenwriter in Hollywood who has – among others – written Armageddon, The Memory in the Skin, The Devil’s Advocate or… Rogue One.

What will Andor tell?

Andor will tell the story of… Cassian Andor. So far, nothing out of the ordinary. This character, we met him in Rogue One as a rebel spy ready to do anything to achieve his ends. As showrunner Tony Gilroy explained in the columns of Vanity Fair, the series will take place five years before this film. This places us between Episode 3 and 4.

Andor saw his planet destroyed by the Empire and since then he has been a refugee who wanders from planet to planet. Over the episodes, we will see him take the bottle and become the character we know. At the same time, we will follow the fate of Mom Mothma, an Imperial senator who fights in a submarine against the terror of the Empire.

The planet Coruscant will be there

This series is important for Lucasfilm, since it will serve as a pretext to dig a little deeper into the Star Wars universe. It will allow you to see the consequences of the authoritarian regime established by the Empire and to discover still unknown facets of certain parts of history. For instance, the trailer shows us Coruscantwhich we haven’t seen since Episode 3, as well as the Imperial Senate.

Even more, the episodes will show us how the Empire brings order to remote worlds. In short, a real overview of the pre-Episode IV universe.

Andor will also happen on remote worlds

Note that several series already exploit this period: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Rebels and The Bad Batch. The film Solo is also set during the reign of the Empire.

Do you have to have seen Rogue One to watch Andor?

As surprising as it may seem, you don’t need to have seen Rogue One to appreciate Andor. The reason is very simple: the series takes place before the film! However, we still recommend viewing in order to understand where the character comes from and to know where we are going.

Andor
Rogue One (2016)

No need to have seen the other Star Wars series either. like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett or Obi-Wan Kenobi to understand everything. The first two take place more than a decade after Andor while the third has no direct connection.

What other Star Wars series are coming?

Lucasfilm does not intend to stop with the Star Wars series, since many others are planned! In February 2023, we will have the right to season 3 of The Mandalorian. This new season should take us to Mandalore and follow the events of The Book of Boba Fett. Then it will be Ahsoka Tano’s turn to have the right to her burst of episodes. As a reminder, this is Anakin’s former padawan who appeared in The Clone Wars series. Other series planned for 2023: Skeleton Crew. Worn by Jude Law, this series will feature young teenagers lost in the galaxy and trying to return home.

Other projects are still in the making at Lucasfilm, such as The Acolyte, a series dedicated to the Sith. A series on Lando Calrissian with Donald Glover is still planned. We are only talking about live series here. Animation series (like season 2 of The Bad Batch) or films are also planned at Lucasfilm’s premises. There will be plenty to do for Star Wars fans!
