Apple confirms a display limitation on MacBook Pros

The arrival of the MacBook Pro 2021 It brought with it many changes, including a new screen with miniLED technology with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. An excellent screen that helps position these laptops as high ranges, although not all have been positive reviews. In these weeks some failures in relation to high temperatures began to be reported.

It was not known exactly if it was a software bug or a bad build of the equipment by Apple. The fact is that many users warned of a brightness decrease automatic display that occasionally appeared next to a warning sign located in the top menu bar or in the control center.

Recently, Apple itself has clarified that it is not a bug, but a system resource to optimize temperature. It has done so through a support document in which we have been able to know that, at certain temperatures and in order to protect the equipment, the system automatically lowers the brightness. In fact, it is not something exclusive to these MacBook Pros, but rather it also happens in the Pro Display XDRexternal screens that Apple has been selling since 2019 and that have identical technology.

Tips Apple gives to avoid this problem

It is fully understandable that, thanks to the good hardware of these computers, they are used for high consumption activities. In fact, the system is more than prepared for it and in most cases these problems should not be found. However, it is true that poor management of resources by the user can be decisive.

For this reason, the company itself gave a series of tips to eliminate this warning signal and reduce brightness and the screen can be used normally. Tips that, as we warned before, are also valid for the Pro Display XDR monitor:

  • Quit any application that may be consuming excessive system resources.
  • Use the reference mode of the screens, unless the current workflow requires that minimum to work.
  • Lower the ambient temperature of the room you are in.
  • close or hide any window that is displaying HDR content.
  • Put the computer to sleep for 5-10 minutes until the internal temperature drops.

If the problem persists after

If you were experiencing this issue and followed these tips, the warning signal and brightness limitation should go away. If not, and the ambient temperature is below 25°C, Apple recommends that you contact support. In this way they will be able to check if there is any other particular problem in the device and, being under warranty, you will have the repair covered if it is necessary.

However, at least from what we can know based on those who have shown their complaints, no cases have been detected in which this problem is prolonged in excess. Usually, just turning off the device for a few minutes fixes the problem quickly. However, we believe it is important that you know what you should do if necessary.
