Apple now allows unlisted apps

The Cupertino company now offers developers to distribute unlisted applications through its App Store. They will only be accessible via a link.

Apple announces a small revolution for its famous application store. The App Store will now support apps that are not listed, i.e. only accessible via a link. To access it, developers will have to make a request to Apple, which retains control over its store. There is also no question of using this method to offer applications that are still in the development phase (preview or beta) or that do not respect the rules of the App Store. On its site, Apple confirms that the application must be ready for the “final distribution” and there is no question of replacing TestFlight.

The Californian giant confirms that unlisted (or unlisted) applications do not appear in the various categories, recommendations or search results of its store. You will necessarily have to go through a URL to access it or through Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager. Tim Cook’s company is indeed targeting a very specific audience with its latest novelty, such as businesses or schools.

Applications not listed on the App Store, what for?

She explains that these apps are ideal for distributing solutions that are not designed to be used by all users of the App Store. “Apps for specific organizations, special events or research studies, or those used for employees as sales tools are good candidates for unlisted distribution”believes Apple.

The iPhone maker wants this tool to be used to reach a limited audience. He cites the example of employees or students of higher education and participants in conferences. It is also expected that the manufacturer will continue to apply its strict policy, in order to avoid overflows on its platform. The presence of an application form confirms that there is no question of offering any type of application.

Once a developer gets approval from Apple, the app will become ” unlisted and will no longer be listed. However, it will be necessary to think before starting, because it will no longer be possible to go back. Once an app is no longer listed in the App Store, the status is final and applies to future releases.

Because unlisted apps are accessible to anyone with the link, Apple recommends having a mechanism in place to prevent unauthorized use.
