That Intel is ahead of Apple and AMD right now is obvious that multiple data have shown. In terms of performance and efficiency, however, they are a little behind, although very close. This is something that Apple does not want to allow and as a result of new rumors they would have a SoC ready that would cannibalize all Intel and AMD desktop products, including the Threadripper 3000. Is it possible? That would be the M1 Ultrareal, fake or an ES?
We are in the field of the purest speculation, mainly because they are results based on predictions of Apple scaling in the same Cortex architecture of its P-Cores. What is established by Max Tech indicates something quite curious and that we do not even know if it is possible given Apple’s limitations with efficiency: a 12-core SoC where all the cores are high-performance.
Apple M1 Ultra, destined for the iMac Pro 2022?
If the M1 Max has put half the industry in check with the good performance of the Apple chip, what they could have up their sleeve is of such a caliber that it is even speculated that it would not be possible, but it is not ruled out either. With this scenario in mind and in that fine thread that supposes the speculation of the final reality, we are going to get fully into the performance predictions of the M1 Ultra, where we will see that what Apple has done is a real bomb in semiconductors.
With an average of 12,500 to 12,700 points and with a single OS, the current M1 Max would achieve those values in Geekbench 5, as we saw last week. But what would happen if there were no throttling in Apple equipment due to temperature? Well, those from Cupertino could go on the attack by launching a SoC with high-performance cores, specifically up to 12 Cores, which would literally crush Intel and AMD in all its desktop aspects.
Estimates are possible as long as Apple manages to control temperature and consumption, but the margin is very large and that gives rise to this speculation. With 250 watts of consumption in its state of maximum performance and with average temperatures of 75 degrees an M1 Ultra SoC with this configuration is technically feasible.
The chip that would destroy records
If it is produced and brought to the iMac Pro 2022, the performance and scalability predictions indicate a score somewhat above 24,000 points, almost 25,000. To place ourselves comparatively speaking, a Ryzen Threadripper 3990X achieves 25,000 points on average and a 3970X goes to the 22,500 points about. What does the i9-12900K achieve as a mainstream desktop benchmark? Its 16 cores and 24 threads achieve a little more than 17,000 points.
Are the predictions very optimistic? It could be, but these would also depend on the frequency and there we do not know how much a SoC with only P-Cores could achieve. Others speak of 15,000 and 18,000 pointsan optimistic figure without a doubt and perhaps more realistic if possible.
In any case, the M1 Max is not expected as such in the iMac Pro 2022 and therefore so much cabala and calculations with what Apple could or could not do in a larger area thanks to the 5nm from TSMC. We’ll see shortly what they have with the bitten apple hidden under lock and key.
