Apple’s M1 Ultra chip isn’t more powerful than an RTX 3090, this benchmark proves it

The Mac Studio’s M1 Ultra CPU GPU is reportedly not as powerful as Nvidia’s RTX 3090 graphics card, despite figures given by Apple at its spring conference.

On the occasion of its spring 2022 conference, Apple lifted the veil on its new super-powerful M1 Ultra chip which can already be found in the new Mac Studio PC, available from 4599 euros. Apple has spoken a lot about the power offered by its chip, but it would ultimately not be as powerful as the American giant had announced a few days ago.

During its conference, Apple claimed in its slides that the M1 Ultra chip’s GPU will deliver similar performance to NVIDIA’s flagship GeForce RTX 3090 graphics card while consuming 200 watts less. The problem is that the reality would be quite different. The Mac Studio would not come close to the high-end graphics card in the benchmarks.

The RTX 3090 is much more powerful than the M1 Ultra chip

In its comprehensive test, The Verge decided to pit the M1 Ultra against the Nvidia RTX 3090 using the Geekbench 5 benchmark, and unsurprisingly, the SoC can’t compete with Nvidia’s chip when used at full power. . The RTX 3090 outperformed the M1 Ultra by more than 100% in Geekbench 5’s compute test. Indeed, the M1 Ultra scored 83,121 points, while the RTX 3090 peaked at 215,034 points.

In gaming, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 shows up to 32% better performance in 4K compared to the M1 Ultra chip in the game Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Although the M1 Ultra chip does not live up to the performance claimed by Apple, it is still very powerful. In particular, the $6,199 Mac Studio performed better than the last $14,000 Mac Pro, even though it doesn’t offer a dedicated graphics card.
