Barcelona will host the Mobile World Congress at least six years more than initially agreed thanks to the agreement signed between the GSMA, the organizing entity of the MWC, and the city of Barcelona. The fair will continue to be held in Barcelona, at least, until 2030. The agreement that certifies it has also been signed by representatives of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Ministry of Economy and Digital Transformation, the Fira de Barcelona and Turismo de Barcelona.
The GSMA CEO Mats Granyrdhas pointed out that «MWC Barcelona continues to be the flagship event of the GSMA, and we couldn’t be happier to have extended our agreement with Barcelona. It is the world’s largest and most influential connectivity event, bringing together leading companies and representatives of the global digital ecosystem. At MWC Barcelona we have debates that help define society’s relationship with technology. Programs such as 4YFN and Industry City showcase innovative products and applications, Diversity 4 Tech showcases the benefits of our differences, and the Ministerial Program is the largest gathering of digital legislators«.
The Mobile World Congress brings to the city and the region several advantages and economic opportunities during the week that the congress lasts. Also to the national technology and mobile sectors. But it goes even further, since the MWC also promotes another series of activities during the rest of the year. Among them Mobile World Capital and the mSchools program.
The GSMA CEO John Hoffmanhas recalled that «Since the first MWC Barcelona in 2006, the MWC has generated €5.4 billion in economic benefits for the host city and its region. And, with the closure of MWC22, it has created an additional 141,000 temporary jobs. This year we hope to generate 240 million euros and another 6,700 temporary jobs. We are delighted to announce that we have exceeded our economic impact creation forecasts of €267 million and 7,100 temporary jobs«.
