Best DDR4 and DDR5 RAM memories: which model to choose?

Do you want to increase your RAM memory on your PC, but do not know what to choose between DDR4 and DDR5? Let us guide you.

Best DDR4 and DDR5 memory

Yes: 2022 is a year between two chairs when it comes to RAM memory for your PC. It’s only natural: DDR5 has just entered the market, and is therefore destined to gradually supplant its ancestor. But beware: we are far from being at the end of the life cycle of DDR4!

Our selection of DDR4 and DDR5 RAM memories in 2022

DDR4 memory

Today, DDR4 is very well established and RAM technology has gone all the way. As a bonus, its prices are now very accessible for anyone who wants to build a PC quickly. You’ll probably read everything and its opposite on the internet, but it’s quite simple: the perfect middle ground for investing in DDR4 RAM in 2022 is to go for DDR4 at 3600MHz. And for that, the barrettes Corsair Vengeance are perfect : they have the latency it takes, at the price it takes, to provide among the best gaming experiences.

If you really want to invest a little more, you can always turn to models overclocked to 5200 MHz for example, but that wouldn’t make much sense now that DDR5 is on the market. You can also choose models with integrated RGB, but this does not change performance; it’s up to you to choose the design that you like the most.

DDR5 memory

Understand one thing: DDR5 is today at the forefront of technology. It is therefore relatively rare compared to DDR4, has not yet reached its full potential, and will require the latest CPUs and motherboards to run. If you decide to invest in DDR5 today, we can therefore determine that the price is not quite an issue for you. And in this case, the G.Skill Trident Z5 DDR5-6000MHz are simply the best thanks to their CAS latency at only 36 for really tight timings.

Obviously, even if it means spending money, you might as well put a bit of RGB on top. However, note that we are at the very beginning of DDR5: your RAM modules will quickly be outdated, or their price will quickly drop sharply. Invest wisely.

What to choose between DDR4 and DDR5?

DDR5 is the future of RAM on our PCs. That’s a fact. It brings in particular theintegration of ECC technologyhitherto reserved for server memories, to add stability to power gain new technology.

But here it is: we are here at the bleeding edge. And the current difficulties of market production mean that DDR5 RAMs are incredibly expensive and produced in small quantities. Only those with an unlimited budget should really care about these for now.

DDR4 is a technology today mastered from start to finish and mass produced. You can find excellent bars at unbeatable prices and with very high performance for very little these days. What also add a little for the swag and the RGB. Also, reason dictates that it is still better to favor DDR4 these days. But if you want to go to the other side… Of course, DDR5 is what you need.

Which module fits my computer?

Two factors are important in selecting your RAM memory. First you need to know the capacity and the maximum power that your motherboard is capable of withstanding in terms of RAM. To do this, find out about your motherboard or take an already installed RAM module as an example.

Then you need to know if the dual channel technology is present or not. This allows two bars to work together, but requires them to be placed in specific slots. These generally have a color code of their own to differentiate them. In general, the best is still that all the RAM sticks installed on your system have the same characteristics.

What does XMP mean?

XMP, for eXtreme Memory Profile, is a profile created by Intel to inform your motherboard of the frequencies and timings up to which they can be used. By default, the BIOS does not necessarily assign the maximum power of the RAM memories, by running them at 2100 MHz instead of 32000 MHz for example. By activating the XMP profile in your BIOS, you are sure that these will be correctly configured.

What is the CAS of a RAM memory?

CAS can be seen as the general latency of your RAM memory. It describes the number of cycles required for it to respond to an instruction. Also, the lower this number, the faster the memory.

How much RAM do I need?

Nowadays, for office automation and basic web, 8 GB of RAM is sufficient. If you are a gamer, the minimum to be safe will be 16 GB of RAM. If you’re the type to game and stream at the same time while keeping a Premiere Pro project open in the corner, then 32GB will come in handy right away. Keep in mind though, if you’re looking to save your budget, that 16GB will be a very solid base for absolutely all small gamers and streamers.
