According to information from our colleagues at Tom’s Hardware, Intel is currently developing a computer chip entirely dedicated to Bitcoin mining. To produce BTC, miners rely on powerful chip-powered computing computers. These computers (ASICs) are responsible for perform complex mathematical calculations in order to maintain the network and secure all exchanges and transfers. This process, linked to the functioning of Bitcoin, is called proof of work.

Inspired by the rise in the currency, massive adoption around the world and growing interest from the general public, Intel would therefore be ready to get into the deep end of cryptocurrencies. The specialized media describes the chip as a new “Bonanza Mine” processor, a chip described as an “ultra-low voltage energy-efficient Bitcoin mining ASIC”.

Intel could make bitcoin mining less energy intensive

De facto, it would seem that Intel’s solution could make it possible to contain electricity consumption gargantuan bitcoin mining. According to the latest estimates, BTC mining consumes as much as a country like Finland, or 0.5% of the electricity produced in the world.

Contacted by the media, Intel corroborates half-words the arrival of a chip dedicated to Bitcoin mining. “Intel has been doing design work around optimized ASICs for several years, starting with orientation work done in Intel labs. We will share more details in the future”, explains the computer giant.

Note that Intel had already patented an algorithmic processing system for cryptocurrency mining as early as 2018. According to information from Tom’s Hardware, Intel should unveil this chip for mining during the virtual conference of the ISSCC (the international conference on semiconductor circuits), which will take place from February 20 to 28, 2022.

A few weeks earlier, Raja Koduri, head of graphics cards at Intel, had already hinted that Intel is very interested in the subject of cryptocurrencies. Moreover, the company has committed to launching graphics cards for crypto-asset mining in its ARC range with Alchemist architecture.
