Buying a leased electric car at €100/month will be possible in 2023

France will announce before the end of the year a new device to help the French to acquire an electric car. This is a leasing offer for which the beneficiary will pay 100 euros each month. The terms of the system, in particular the number of beneficiaries and the maximum amount of their income, will be announced before the end of 2022 for implementation in 2023. But some problems are still stuck.

In 2020, at the end of the first confinement following the COVID epidemic, the French State set up several systems to support the French who wish to acquire an electric car. Two financial schemes: the ecological bonus and the conversion bonus. And an electrification support device to install a domestic charging station. Two years later, a million French households have benefited from it. A considerable success.

But a partial success. Indeed, despite this aid, the acquisition of an electric car remains too expensive for the budget of some households. To help the latter take the plunge, Emmanuel Macron, then a candidate for re-election to the Élysée, announced the establishment of a leasing system allowingbuy an electric car for 100 euros per month. Now that Emmanuel Macron is President of the Republic again, it is time to talk about this campaign promise again.

Electric car at 100 € per month: the terms will soon be revealed

Gabriel Attal, Minister Delegate in charge of Public Accounts, was this weekend the guest of the Grand Jury, a political program hosted by our colleagues from LCI, RTL and Le Figaro. During this one-hour interview, very focused on purchasing power and rising energy prices, Gabriel Attal confirmed that the device will be presented before the end of 2022 (go to 38e minutes of the interview). It will be incorporated into the 2023 Finance Act for implementation next year.

As part of this interview, the Minister did not reveal the outlines of this facilitated leasing offer: the number of people concerned, the income conditions to benefit from it, the duration of the device, etc. But he assures that this promise will be kept, because it meets the government’s commitment to reduce CO2 emissions. On the other hand, he is aware that she will encounter certain difficulties.

The cost of energy will be a brake on the purchase of an electric car

He cites the supply of electric cars, hampered by the shortage of components. He announces that two “gigafactories” (using the term Tesla) will be built in France, in order to create a 100% tricolor sector, thus reducing certain logistical and geopolitical problems. He also cites the explosion in energy prices. He recalls that the government blocked the increase in electricity to 4% until the end of 2022.

After this deadline, the state “will continue to protect the French”, as Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne indicated last week. Gabriel Attal admits, however, that the increase in 2023 cannot be completely offset. And some economists fear that the electricity bill could be 45% to 50% higher. Something to dampen the enthusiasm of electric vehicle enthusiasts.
