CaixaForum Plus, the streaming platform you should try now

CaixaForum bears in its name that of one of the most recognized cultural institutions in our country, CaixaForum, that of the ten centers spread throughout the geography of Spain, to which we must add the CosmoCaixa Science Museum. All these centers are managed by the La Caixa Foundation, and in their already long history at the service of culture, they have given shelter to all kinds of exhibitions, conferences and many other types of events with culture as their epicenter. In my case, I must also say that I have been in love, for years, with the vertical garden that presides over the access to the CaixaForum in Madrid, but hey, that’s another story.

Thus, as a person who greatly admires the work of La Caixa in this sense, since I first learned of the existence of CaixaForum Plus, I have been clear, even before having explored it conscientiously, that it was going to be a platform that deserves the shame… and no, I was not wrong.

But, let us start at the beginning. CaixaForum Plus is a new free streaming service offered by Fundación la Caixa, and which offers both its own productions and third-party content. As you may have imagined, yes, it is not the place to find the latest fashion releases or the series and movies that everyone is talking about. No, as is easily deducible, all the content that you will find on this platform revolves around the world of art, as well as creative disciplines related to it. From cinema to architecture, from fashion to music, from science to theater.

To facilitate browsing its catalogue, when you register, CaixaForum will offer you nine categories, in order to recommend the content that best suits your interests. But also, you can access them whenever you want from the web menu and its app. They are the following:

  • Architecture and design
  • performing arts
  • visual and plastic arts
  • life sciences
  • Physical sciences
  • Cinema
  • Literature
  • Music
  • thought and history

But in addition to these nine large groups, CaixaForum Plus also has the usual content exploration systems that we already know from other streaming services, from a large home page with content grouped according to various reasons (original content from the platform, short proposals, music documentaries, podcasts, etc.), complete catalogue, news and, of course, also a search engine.

Registration, as I have indicated before, is totally free, but for those users who prefer not to provide their data, it is possible to access the service and review its catalog (although not reproduce its contents) without registering or logging in, so that my recommendation is that, if you have a minimum of interest in the world of culture, spend at least a few minutes reviewing everything that this service offers you. In my case, after only a couple of minutes, I have not doubted it.

And if you like cinema, I recommend that you start with Sesión Continua, by Arturo González-Campos, small pieces, all under 10 minutes, about some of the most important films in Spanish cinema. And for tonight I saved Robert Fantinatto, a documentary film by Robert Fantinatto about the history of electronic music and some of the fascinating artifacts from its origins (by the way, if you want to whet your appetite, we already talked about « classic synths’ in Dave Smith’s obituary).
