Call of Duty: no game will be released in 2023, a first for 20 years

2023’s Call of Duty might not come out. The game could indeed be delayed by a year, according to Bloomberg. It would be the first time in almost twenty years that the license has missed an annual release. The 2022 episode seems to him always planned.

Call of Duty Warzone game

Activision Blizzard could make the decision not to leave Call of Duty in 2023. It is Jason Schreier, the famous Bloomberg journalist, who reveals the case. It would be the first time in almost twenty years that the series has missed an annual release.

According to the newspaper, Activision Blizzard made this decision after that one of the recent episodes did not achieve its goals. Even if the game is not named, we suspect that it is Vanguard, released in November 2021. It has indeed had the worst commercial launch for the license for fourteen years, even if it is is still hoisted at the top of the charts almost everywhere in the world.

Call of Duty 2022 and Warzone to the rescue

The episode scheduled for coming out in 2023 could therefore arrive in 2024. However, the one planned for 2022 would see the light of day. It could be Modern Warfare 2. To fill the void to come, it should be filled with content for an additional year. Likewise, Activision should continue to bet on Warzone, the real engine of the franchise since 2020.

A break in 2023 could be beneficial for the saga. Not only would this allow developers to tweak their copy, to come up with something new, but also to arouse expectation among the public. A strategy already employed, successfully, by Ubisoft with Assassin’s Creed.

2023 would therefore be the first year without Call of Duty since 2004. Since Call of Duty 2 released in 2005, we have the right to an episode every November. If the context changes each time and small novelties appear, it’s roughly always the same soup for almost 20 years. Allowing developers to take a step back from their work could only be a good thing.

Finally, Jason Schreier specifies that this decision has nothing to do with the recent takeover of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft. As a reminder, Phil Spencer had also mentioned the idea of stopping out of Call of Duty every year.
