microsoft Y canonically have announced that the development platform .NET will be available as a native experience on Ubuntu hosts and container images from its version 22.04 LTS. This means that .NET developers will be able to get started with Ubuntu Linux and take advantage of its regular security patches as well as new releases.

Users and developers who want to can install .NET 6 packages on Ubuntu with a simple command: #sudo apt install dotnet6. That’s all they’ll need to do to install .NET on their systems. The .NET platform was one of Microsoft’s first contributions to open source projects and has a developer community of more than five million people. Many of them use both Linux and Linux-based containers.

The release of .NET as a .deb package for Ubuntu is the result of collaboration between Microsoft and Canonical. This is a very close collaboration, and this release is expected to be the first to develop more features for the open source framework in Ubuntu.

In addition to this release, Canonical is also offering a new type of container image, with just the set of packages and files needed to run. These images meet developers’ needs for attack surface and image size, without sacrificing Ubuntu’s stability and familiar features. They are available in the company’s OCI Image Portfolio as well as in the Microsoft Artifact Registry.

Richard Lander, .NET Program Managerhas highlighted that «Working with Canonical has allowed us to offer ease of use and enhanced security to .NET developers. The project leverages Canonical’s leadership in the Linux ecosystem, and Microsoft’s deep expertise in development tools and platforms. As a result, a combination of integrated packages and container images has been achieved that will benefit both community developers and large enterprise customers, through open source.«.

Valentin Viennot, Product Manager at Canonicalhas pointed out that «Ubuntu now has an end-to-end, development-to-production history of supporting extremely small container images, starting with the .NET platform. We believe this is an important improvement for both of our communities.«.
