After limiting the use of TikTok to 40 minutes a day for children, the National Administration of Chinese Radio and Television has decided to further toughen the rules for minors. From now on, Chinese children under 18 will no longer be able to donate on streaming platforms.

The new policy is part of a special two-month campaign to end the “chaos” in streaming companies, with the aim of promoting content deemed appropriate and legal. The measure should prevent children from spending their parents’ money to support influencers on the country’s streaming platforms, including Bilibili, Tencent’s Huya & Douyu and Douyin, the local version of TikTok. This morning, we reported that an English child had spent 2500 euros on an influencer and that Apple refused to reimburse his parents. The government also announced that it was now impossible for a child to become a streamer, unless they have the consent of their guardian.

In addition to protect parents’ wallets, China has also imposed a curfew on streaming apps. Now anyone watching livestreamed content via a child’s account will see all streams blocked after 10 p.m.. The country will therefore encourage content creators to “ strengthen the management of peak hours for emissions “.

This makes several years that China greatly restricts access to screens for children, who can only play video games 3 hours a week. As a reminder, since 2019, it is also no longer possible for them to play video games after 10 p.m. To enforce these rules, China notably imposes a facial recognition test on all authorized titles to verify the identity of night gamers.
