China has a plan to be a robotics innovation hub by 2025

China has unveiled its plan to become a global robotics innovation hub by 2025. The five-year plan focuses to achieve this on improvements in key components for the robots, such as servo motors and control panels. According to China Daily, the Minister of Industry and Information Technology, who has been in charge of communicating the plan, has stated that the revenue of the robotics sector in the country is expected to grow an average of 20% each year between 2021 and 2025.

Between 2016 and 2020, the robotics sector in China has already had an annual growth rate of 15% and revenues that last year exceeded 15,000 million dollars for the first time. That same year, the density of manufacturing robots reached 246 units per 10,000 people, which is about double the world average. With the announced plan, the country aims to double this density by 2025.

The Chinese authorities have assured that various efforts will be made in order to achieve progress in the main components of the robots. Among them are, in addition to the servomotors, controls and speed reducers. And according Wang Weiming, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China. «The goal is that by 2025, the performance and reliability of these key components manufactured in the country can reach the level of foreign advanced products«.

In addition, the Chinese government expects advanced high-end robots to increase their adoption in more sectors, including automotive, aerospace, rail, logistics and mining. Meanwhile, according to various statistics from the country’s National Statistical Office, the cumulative production of industrial robots in China has reached 330,000 units in the first 11 months of this year, representing a year-on-year increase of 49%.

The Director and General Secretary of the China Robot Industry alliance, Song Xiaogang, has stated that robots are important carriers of emerging technologies. Also that as key equipment of modern industry, robots can lead the digital development of a sector, as well as the updates of intelligent systems. In addition, it points out that service robots can be assistants for the older population thanks to technologies such as 5G and Artificial Intelligence.

Thanks to service robots, therefore, older people could improve their quality of life. Because not all robotics have to focus on industrial robots, but China is also going to pay attention with its plan to other types of robots, designed more as support and help to the population.
