Corsair mistakenly leaks its fastest SSD to date

Thanks to the bandwidth of the PCI Express 5.0 interface, solid-state drives are moving at double-digit speeds in terms of the number of gigabytes of transfers per second. Well, one of the SSDs that we most expect for the next generation is the Corsair MP700 PCIe Gen 5, which has leaked fleetingly. What data have we been able to learn from the little that has been revealed and how does it compare to other similar units?

Due to the backward compatibility that the PCIe protocol allows, it is possible to connect a device for Gen 5 in a fourth generation connector. Of course with the lowest transfer speed between the two. This allows SSD manufacturers to launch models compatible with the same standard without worrying about having a limited market and that is why, as has happened with the NVMe PCIe Gen 4 SSDs, we are going to see the same with the fifth generation ones.

Due to an oversight, Corsair has leaked SSD MP700, its first solid-state drive of the M.2 type that uses the PCI Express 5.0 interface, which allows it to reach a speed of 10 GB/s in sequential read speed and 9.5 GB /s in the opposite direction. The form factor of said unit is 2280, although what stands out the most is its huge aluminum heat sink. Something that seems to be common among the new generation units due to the increase in temperature.

Regarding random access speeds, performance is unknown at the moment, however, it is known that it is compatible with the NVMe 2.0 standard and uses TLC-type flash memory. Regarding information such as the number of IOPS, the price or the launch date remain unknown for the moment. Which is to be expected, since Corsair hasn’t officially unveiled it, let’s not forget this is coming from a leak.

One thing we’d like to know is the flash controller Corsair has included with its MP700, as it falls short of the 14GB/s that state-of-the-art solid-state drives are supposed to achieve. So we should expect a somewhat lower launch price than other units with similar technical specifications.

Dropper released

At the moment there are very few motherboards that support PCIe Gen 5 SSDs, so few users will be able to take advantage of the speeds of the Corsair MP700. Hence, the presentation and launch of these products is being carried out in stages, given that at the moment there are few users who can take advantage of their capabilities. Specifically, users of Ryzen 7000 processors and some models of Z790 boards for Intel Core 12 and 13.
