Covid-19 may decrease pain in cancer patients, study reveals

Scientists research continues around the world on the effects of Covid-19 in people, this is how in the middle of medical studies in Switzerland found that the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes the disease, could temporarily reduce pain in cancer patients.

Doctors from the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG) analyzed the case of three patients, between 67 and 84 years old, who were admitted after becoming infected with coronavirus and they experienced a decrease in cancer pain during the time they were infected.

“Some patients with pain related to their cancer have experienced a significant reduction or even disappearance of this pain during the acute phase of the infection”, they point out in the study published in the scientific journal “Pain” and cited by the EFE agency.

The patients who experienced the disappearance of the bothersome cancer, indicated that the pain gradually returned while they recovered from the contagion of Covid-19, explained the doctors in the study led by Dr. Lisa Hentch, of the section of Palliative Medicine of the HUG , and Matteo Coen, from Internal Medicine.

Why does the pain decrease?

The scientists explained that Covid-19 causes inflammation of some organs, something that would affect the insula, which is one of the deepest parts of the brain whose function, among others, is to transmit some perceptions to the body such as pain.

Previously, doctors had also detected that some patients did not experience a drowning sensation due to lack of oxygen when they had Covid-19, something that was due to the influence of the virus on the brain insula, adds EFE.

“More studies are needed to confirm these observations and validate these. hypothesis, although these can shed light on the mechanisms responsible for the perception of pain, opening new avenues in the investigation and therapies ”, indicate the doctors in a statement.

It is important to mention that it is a disease largely unknown to scientists, so the HUG doctors indicated that for the moment, EFE points out, it is a hypothesis and that another explanation could be the influence of SARS- CoV-2 in the peripheral nervous system that is part of the transmission of pain and suffocation sensations.
