Daniel Craig explains the end of Dying Can Wait

For the first time since the release of Die Can Wait, Daniel Craig is speaking out about the controversial end of his James Bond adventures.

Last lap for Daniel Craig, who said goodbye to Agent 007 in To die can wait this autumn. Several months after this fanfare release, the British actor returns for the first time to the grand finale of the film directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga.

*** Warning for spoilers on Dying Can Wait ***

With such a title, one would have suspected that things would turn sour for the most famous spy. In this new adventure, James Bond faces a formidable enemy who has kidnapped a brilliant scientist. Camped by Rami Malek, this formidable antagonist holds technological weapons and more than ever, the future is uncertain for the agent of MI6.

But onlookers had hopes that James Bond would retire, and have a happy life far from armed clashes and fierce battles. It won’t be like that. In the last minutes, James Bond sacrifices himself to save his daughter and his companion, camped by Léa Seydoux. A tragic conclusion to the journey initiated in 2006 with Casino Royale.

An ending that makes sense?

During a conference with Variety, Daniel Craig gave some details about this ultimate sacrifice.

“I think it was essential to create a tragic situation. The idea that there is an insurmountable problem, that there is greater force at play and that no one can do anything about it. This being Savin’s weapon. That it kills the one thing Bond wants, which is to be with the people he loves, thus explains why nothing would be worth living for him anymore. Otherwise he would put their lives in danger, and that’s the last thing in the world he wants to do. It was an incredibly important piece to unfold the plot thread, as it couldn’t feel like a random act. There had to be some weight or it wouldn’t work. Without it I don’t think we would have done it. We would have found another way to end it ”.

Prepare a sequel?

Daniel Craig’s departure was recorded, although he was postponed for To die can wait. Thus, the franchise had no other choice but to put an end to its course, undoubtedly in the most definitive way possible. However, this bodes well for the spy, who will now be able to afford a new face and a new identity.

We do not yet know who the role was given, but MGM obviously already has ideas in mind. Because as Daniel Craig points out, we can see at the end of the credits that James Bond will return. When and how ? This has yet to be defined. What is certain is that 007 has not yet said its last word.
