DDOS attacks are now called “service flood collective attacks”

DDOS attacks are now entitled to an official French translation: “collective attacks by saturation of service”. As usual, the French language enrichment commission provided an extended French-language alternative for a concept generally referred to by its English version. Other terms from the world of telecoms were given the same treatment.

Distributed Denial of Service: This is what the acronym stands for DDOSwell known to cybersecurity researchers and, a fortiori, hackers. It was the latter, among others, who targeted Ukraine at the very beginning of the war. The principle itself is relatively simple: it involvesattack a server by bombarding it with requests in order to crash it and, with it, the platforms and services it hosts. In recent years, these have become more and more frequent, reaching a record number in 2021.

If the term is now rather well anchored in common language, it is obviously not to the taste of French language enrichment committee. In the official journal of March 2022, the organization gives it a new designation: “collective attack by saturation of service” or, as desired, “attack by interruption of service for a DOS”.

DDOS attacks are entitled to an official French translation

The Commission defines DDOS attacks – it’s still a bit difficult to get used to their new official name – as follows: it is a “attack by service interruption which consists of simultaneously sending requests from a large number of computers in order to saturate access to the targeted service”. In all, several terms related to the world of telecoms were also entitled to a translation and a definition.

We find in particular the SIM swapping, a technique that involves transferring the victim’s phone number to their own SIM card. From now on, it will therefore be necessary to say “SIM card theft”, a scam that will have to be defined as a “fraud which consists in appropriating a mobile telephone number, without the knowledge of its holder, by obtaining from the operator the association of this number with a new SIM card”.
