DDR5: Time to upgrade? We see an expert opinion

DDR5 memory has been a reality for a long time, and after the arrival of Intel Alder Lake-S processors, and motherboards with support for this new standard, it has undoubtedly become one more option to consider both in the professional sector and in the general consumer sector.

Its values are clear. As many of our readers will know, DDR5 memory promises higher performance while maintaining higher energy efficiency, higher density per modulus and superior reliability. These keys can make an important difference, especially in the professional sector, but in order to make the leap to this new memory standard we will have to make a significant investment, since we will need to change the motherboard and processor.

With all that in mind, and taking into account the current market situation, the first question that comes to mind is very simple: is it time to upgrade to DDR? It depends, as it is a significant investment And, obviously, not all user profiles will be able to make this investment profitable in the same way, but what do the experts think?

Jordi García, business director at Kingston Iberia, has given us his opinion on this matter, and I must say that his approach seems to me sensible and quite accurate. I also found it interesting, and that is why I have decided to share his opinion with all of you. Then I leave you, as is, Jordi’s opinion.

DDR5

After many years of waiting, seven in particular, we have finally made the generational leap from DDR4 to DDR5 memory. What does this new generation suppose? A new version of a product does not always meet expectations for improvement, but in this case there are plenty of reasons for us to consider that this is a great revolution that It improves on its predecessors in all respects.

This improvement has been accompanied by new versions, all fifth generation, in the rest of the components for computers: motherboards, SSDs, processors … An improvement that allows maximize the experience.

We have come this far thanks to joint work of manufacturers and suppliers They are part of the JEDEC Committee (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council), in charge of setting memory standards for the market, where Kingston has a seat, like other manufacturers of microchips and drivers.

We recently released our first and only DDR5 model to date, the Kingston FURY Beast, in addition to our DDR5 Value RAM, both approved by major motherboard manufacturers. Although this is only the beginning of the path of this new technology, both for us and for other companies. Now we must continue to expand the limits of this memory enhancement to adapt to the demands of our private clients and companies.

Technically, DDR5 is better than DDR4 in all respects; speed, storage, consumption and data integrity. They increase their capacity up to 128 gigabytes per module, they raise their transmission speed to 4,800 (and can reach a maximum of 8,670 (when placed on the correct motherboard), they lower their consumption to 1.1 V.

Too incorporate the ECC on the chip (ODECC) to improve stability at extreme speeds, dual 32-bit subchannels for increased efficiency, and an in-module power management integrated circuit (PMIC).

The introduction of new technologies is key in this improvement process; for example, divide the module data width into two subchannels, and increasing them banks and burst length. All this means that we can load more data, and therefore carry out more tasks or heavier tasks at the same time, to which is added, as we have commented previously, the increase in the maximum capacity of each module, rising from the 32 GB of the DDR4 to the 128 GB of the DDR5, and the speed, which also increases from 3,200 to 4,800 respectively.

Therefore, the answer seems clear: the sooner we can move to this new level of components, the sooner we can enjoy all its virtues, although certainly It is a significant investment, as it is necessary to have the latest components of the generation that has just come out components so that the new memories can function properly. Our studies indicate that by 2023 DDR5 will surpass DDR4 in popularity and sales. If you have the opportunity to try them, you will be able to enjoy more powerful titles of the coming years and new technologies.
