The history of open source is the history of the technological evolution of the last three decades. No one knows this better than the big companies in the sector, those that were already there and remain, but also those that emerged supported by the explosion of a phenomenon that came to change everything. We would never have reached the current technological level without the push of open source and all the benefits that it has brought.
Today there is no digitized industrial fabric immune to open source, for very good reasons, all the advantages provided by this development model: quality, cost savings, collaboration and reuse, security, transparency, technological independence… The world of company has long since assimilated and exploited the benefits of open source for its own benefit.
On the other hand, Public Administrations and Organizations provide essential services to citizens in areas such as health, education, etc. and they are also immersed in an important technological transformation process.
Given the penetration and intrinsic value achieved by open source in and for the private sector, what about the public? Do public administrations take advantage of the advantages provided by this model of technological development? The truth is that yes and for a long time. There are numerous examples of the implementation of open source in public administrations both internationally and in Europe and even nationally, speaking of Spain.
However, much remains to be done. Open source has an increasingly significant presence in Spanish public administrations, but the margin for growth and, therefore, for full use of all its advantages is yet to be exploited and the new technological policies within the framework of the European Union they affect it.
