Disney + confirms that it will launch a cheaper subscription with advertising. When will it arrive in Spain?

Rumors returned last week that point to the possibility that the mouse platform launched a cheaper rate. No sooner said than done: Disney+ has just announced that a cheaper, ad-supported subscription is coming to the US this year.

In addition, and most interestingly, it comes with the fact that Disney + plans to launch this cheaper option internationally in 2023.

“Expanding access to Disney+ to a broader audience at a lower price is a win for everyone: consumers, advertisers and our storytellers” Kareem Daniel, president of Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution, said in a statement. “More consumers will be able to access our amazing content. Advertisers will be able to reach a larger audience and our storytellers will be able to share their amazing work with more fans and families.”

It is no longer a rumor: Disney + will have a cheaper rate with advertising

We have been hearing rumors for a long time about the possibility that Disney + would end up launching a cheaper rate and that it would include advertising, in addition to its usual rates. A strategy that would serve to attract the maximum number of customers. But Since Disney launched its streaming content service in November 2019, we haven’t seen this subscription fee.

Now, sources inside Disney have reported that the reason was that the library was much smaller than Netflix’s, so they first wanted to build a solid foundation and add this ad-supported subscription model when user growth started to slow down.

Last 2021 the number of new Disney + subscribers was reduced, especially in the United States. So, although it is true that by the end of the year they had managed to reach 130 million customers, the base of this growth was abroad, where there are lower prices. In this way, a new subscription model with ads in the United States could increase the number of subscribers by improving the company’s account balance.

In a statement, Disney ad sales chief Rita Ferro said she will share more about the plan at the company’s initial presentation in May, adding that “lAdvertisers have been clamoring for the opportunity” to partner with Disney+.

Advertising will take on a great weight on Disney +

Hulu, owned by Netflix, offers an ad-supported subscription model for $6.99 per month. And it earns the same money from advertising from those users as it does from its subscription model, which makes it a very interesting market. Recall that Vizio, a television manufacturer, earns more money from advertising than from Smart TV sales

On the other hand, and as we have indicated before, Disney+ intends to launch this new cheaper rate and with ads in Europe, and therefore in Spain, in 2023. In any case, we will have to wait for the month of May, date on which the entertainment giant will give more information about it to see how the new Disney+ rate will work with advertising.
