Disney tops Annie Award nominations

Raya and the Last Dragon, Luca and The Mitchell vs. the Machines are in the running for the title of animated film of the year.

The year 2021 was marked by the pandemic and the closure of cinemas around the world. However, on the animation side, the studios have not been idle and have offered many feature films and series of the genre, mostly through roundabout means. Disney in particular has used its SVOD platform to offer its latest productions to the public.

It is in this rather particular context, while the 7th art is finally finding its colors, that the International Association of Animated Films unveils the list of nominees for the 49th Annies Awards ceremony. As you might expect, the big-eared firm largely dominates the rankings, with no less than 10 nominations for Raya and the Last Dragon as well as 8 for Luca from Pixar.

Netflix is not left out with 8 nominations for The Mitchell vs. the Machines, produced by Sony Pictures and broadcast from April 23 on the SVOD platform. Series Arcane is also getting a certain spotlight, especially in the category Best Animated Television Series. She competes with other animated series from Reed Hastings’ platform like Love, Death + Robots or Tuca & Bertie.

Disney + does not have to envy its competitor with two series named in the same category. To begin with Star Wars: Visions, anthology inspired by the saga of George Lucas and also and above all Bob’s Burger produced by Fox but broadcast on the platform in France. Note, however, that the big project of the genre for Disney is not part of the lot. Indeed, Marvel What if? obviously did not convince the jury, who did not mention it at any time in the ranking.

Shang-Chi and The Suicide Squad collide

While the ceremony is mainly devoted to animation, special effects and character animation in live-action movies are also taken into account. In this category, several cinema successes face off against series offered on the small screen. Thus, we find The Suicide Squad by James Gunn as well as Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings. The two rival houses will therefore once again compete to win the jackpot. Disney leaves with a certain advantage since Y: The Last Man (FOX) and Flora & Ulysses are also in contention. Finally, Amazon Prime Video has managed to find its way with The Tomorrow War.

Also video game titles

Video games are not excluded from the competition either, since several titles of the genre compete in a dedicated category. Thus, we find Disney Wonderful Worlds competing against It Takes Two, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Madrid Black as well as Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

See you at the start of 2022 to find out which of these productions will win the precious rewards.
