DJI on the American blacklist

Despite the change of administration, the United States continues to put pressure on China. Washington has added drone builder DJI and seven other companies in the country to its blacklist.

US investors will not be able to buy or sell the shares of eight new Chinese companies, which the US Treasury Department has added to the investment blacklist. Conversely, the incriminated companies can no longer import American technologies without a special license.

Human rights abuses in Xinjiang province

For the White House, it is about putting pressure on companies that would facilitate human rights abuses against the Muslim minority of the Uyghurs based in the province of Xinjiang. Brian Nelson, the US Under Secretary for Financial Intelligence, explains that the authorities’ action highlights how these companies in the Chinese defense and surveillance technology sectors ” actively cooperate with government efforts [chinois] to suppress members of ethnic and religious minority groups “.

Among these companies is therefore DJI, the well-known drone manufacturer. The company claims to have done nothing that justifies its presence on this blacklist. In a previous statement on the same subject, DJI announced that it was evaluating all the options available to it to ensure that its customers, partners and suppliers are treated fairly.

It is a serious blow for the manufacturer, which counts in its capital several big American names of the investment like Sequoia Capital China and Kleiner Perkins. These funds could be forced to release their stake in DJI, which would weaken the financial position of the company.
