Electric scooters have invaded our cities. Urban mobility is evolving more and more and self-service scooters are now an integral part of our contemporary urban panorama. However, if self-service bicycles have never really posed a problem inside our cities, scooters make much more noise. Several fatal accidents have happened, and it is even now forbidden to drive with it on a sidewalk, under penalty of receiving a fine.

Lime, which has installed its self-service electric scooters in several cities in France, now has fight against the bad behavior of its users. The operator thus announced two major innovations today. The first should make it possible to fight against driving on sidewalks. The second allows it to fight against driving while intoxicated.

Lime will try to prevent users from riding on sidewalks and driving while intoxicated

To prevent its users from driving on city sidewalks, Lime deployed a first invention. It specifically aims to detect and deter traffic on a sidewalk using a device called Lime Vision. The latter is a system equipped with a camera and an artificial intelligence system that allows the scooter to identify in real time that a user is riding on a sidewalk. Lime then explained that in the event of traffic on a sidewalk “the technology slows the speed of the scooter and alerts the driver and surrounding pedestrians, with an audible signal”.

With respect to drunk driving in the summer, Lime announced a responsiveness test to be performed on the Lime app. It starts after 10 p.m. and takes on the appearance of a game of reflexes to be played. The test “takes place before unlocking the scooter and allows the rider to self-assess their reaction speed and ability to ride. In case of insufficient reaction, the scooter cannot be unlocked” Lime also said in a statement.
