DuckAssistant and the rush to integrate AI into search

The interest that Chatbot GPT has aroused has been evident. In fact, Bing experienced a surge in downloads after announcing that it was integrating it as a new feature, reaching up to 400,000 in January alone. This has caused a lot of rushing for fear of being left behind in AI integration. Therefore, the latest news we have is that DuckAssistant is now available on DuckDuckGo.

DuckAssistant and Wikipedia, is this the only source?

DuckAssistant is a new option, although still in beta version, that generates immediate responses and that it can be very promising. And it is based both on Artificial Intelligence and on one of the largest internet sources: Wikipedia.

The most remarkable thing is that the results it offers are based solely on information contained in this encyclopedia. However, it is not a mere “cut and paste”, but rather uses Artificial Intelligence to generate a brief summary of what has been found using natural language. In this way, the answer is specified that is more real than traditional search results.

Furthermore, this new feature of DuckDuckGo not only offers data that it collects from Wikipedia, but also includes source links from which he took them. In this way, users have the possibility of comparing the information and, also, analyzing if the content returned by DuckAssistant is really useful or if there are still many aspects that need to be perfected.

In fact, the company itself has assumed that errors can occur in the results and that some may not stick to what is actually being asked. For this reason, it is interesting that the sources are included in the answers to be able to make the pertinent checks on whether DuckAssistant can be useful when using the search engine like DuckDuckGo or not.

Doubts about the AI model, does it protect privacy or not?

Despite the benefits that this new feature promises, such as quick, specific, and helpful responses, there are concerns about the lack of transparency about the AI model being employed. And it is believed that may be using OpenAI’s GPT-3 or ChatGPT API. This means that using DuckAssistant could mean that user searches are sent to these applications.

This has raised some suspicions about the care of privacy that the company has resolved without any inconvenience. It seems that when a person uses this function of DuckDuckGo, the question is not sent to OpenAI, but rather the Wikipedia article related to the search is derived. Therefore, it seems that yes, anonymity is met to which the company has made so much reference.

DuckAssistant is expected to make mistakes

This was surprising at first because the CEO of DuckDuckGo, Weinberg, has made it very clear that he does not expect DuckAssistant to be perfect, but quite the opposite: to make mistakes. This way, they will be able to study how to improve the precision in the answerswhat could be going wrong and how to prevent some of the results that are generated from being false.

However, Weinberg stresses that the chances of DuckAssistant being able to return responses that are truly off-the-cuff and far-fetched are slim. However, this is not to say that there are not several things to change and improve as users use it.

DuckAssistant is still very new and it takes a lot of people to use this new feature so that they can see if it is useful for them and if it makes it easier for them to search. In the end, Artificial Intelligence is, little by little, relegating to one side the way in which search engines traditionally worked, offering what in the times in which we live we demand so much: immediacy.
