DuckDuckGo and Bitwarden team up to use biometric authentication in the browser

Bitwarden

For a few weeks I’ve been testing the beta of the new web browser DuckDuckGo for macOS and the truth is that it works quite well. Just because of its YouTube ad blocker, it’s already worth it.

And if now, on top of that, it’s going to integrate an authentication system combined with your iPhone so you don’t have to enter passwords, and use Face ID, so much the better. Let’s see what they have achieved with the collaboration of Bitwarden.

DuckDuckGo has announced a new partnership with Bitwarden, the open source password manager. Together they will launch the first external password manager to be integrated directly into the DuckDuckGo browser for macOS.

Bitwarden is a password manager Open source that offers features very similar to other typical password managers, such as the ability to store and manage multiple passwords, generate strong passwords, and automatically fill in login forms on websites. In addition to being open source, Bitwarden is also completely gratuitousmaking it an attractive option for those looking for a secure and affordable password manager.

Log in to websites with Face ID

Well, DuckDuckGo and Bitwarden have teamed up to develop a website authentication system through the DuckDuckGo browser, still in beta phase, using the iPhone: instead of typing the password, you will use FaceID.

Thanks to this new authentication methodusers will be able to simply use a security key, biometric authentication (Face ID) or a unique code sent to their email or mobile device to start a session on a web page that requires it.

With this new system, by using a security key, biometric authentication or a one-time code, users can be sure that only they have access to their password manager, even if their password is somehow compromised. It is a development that is part of the FIDO Alliance and is becoming the gold standard for passwords. It will now be integrated into the DuckDuckGo browser, but we will see it in more web browsers soon.
