eBay could be next to accept cryptocurrencies as payment

eBay may be the next e-commerce site to accept cryptocurrency payments like Bitcoin and Ethereum. In an interview with TheStreet, CEO Jamie Iannone confirmed that the site would open up to new forms of payment, without giving further details.

With the explosion in popularity of cryptocurrencies, many services and businesses have decided to adopt these digital currencies as means of payment. This is particularly the case of Mastercard, Visa or more recently PayPal, which has been used to pay in Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in France since March 2021.

Since January 14, 2022, Tesla even accepts Dogecoin as a means of payment. An announcement which also caused a 25% jump in the price of this cryptocurrency. Several brands have recently announced their intention to accept digital currencies as payment, such as Razer for example. Gold, we just learned that eBay might be next on the list.

eBay wants to seduce Gen Z by accepting cryptocurrencies

In an interview with TheStreet, e-commerce site CEO Jamie Iannone implied that support for cryptocurrencies as means of payment will soon be a reality. “We are just finishing our transition to be able to manage payments, we are now able to process a volume of 85 billion dollars on our platform directly. This gives us the possibility to offer ourselves new forms of payment”, he explains.

You will agree, the boss does not directly quote cryptocurrencies, but in this interview, he reconsiders his intention to appeal more to Generation Z, i.e. people born between 1997 and 2010. A segment of the population who is interested in cryptocurrencies. “We supported Google Pay and Apple Pay. We have a partnership with Afterpay in Australia, which is a very popular platform for Gen Z […] We continue to evaluate other forms of payments that we should take on the platform. We do not currently accept cryptocurrencies for example”, he concludes.

On this subject, Jamie Ianonne announced that a meeting with investors will take place on March 10, 2022during which “we’re going to dig into all of those things, payments, advertising and our target categories.” As you will have understood, eBay could very well make an announcement on this date.
